Roxxy Andrews channelled her drag grandmother (and drag mother) to win her lip sync against Jorgeous. Here’s a little more on Roxxxy’s inspiration…
On the July 12, 2024 episode of season 9 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (the Lip-Sync Lalaparuza Smackdown episode) Roxxxy Andrews got emotional when she revealed that she had just paid homage to her drag grandmother and mama after winning her lips sync against Jorgeous to “Holding Out For A Hero” by Bonnie Tyler (originally from the soundtrack to the film Footloose). If you need a reminder, you can re-watch the lip sync assassins battle it out right here.
“It was a song my drag mother and drag grandmother did for talents, and when I saw it on the list, I knew that there was nothing else I wanted to choose…but, to honour them,” Roxxy said.
“Well, you did honour them,” RuPaul replied. “I’m sure they are shinning down on you.”
“They are. They are with me right now,” Roxxxy responded. “It’s crazy.”
Roxxxy was talking about Tandi Andrews and her mother Erica Andrews. Tandi Andrews, notably took home Miss Continental back in 1994, while Erica Andrews, won the Miss U.S. of A title in 1999. (Following in their pageant footsteps Roxxxy Andrews was crowned Miss Glamorous in 2022)
Roxxxy’s drag grandmother Tandi Andrews was a well-loved entertainer out of San Antonio, Texas but had also called Atlanta, Georgia home. She was born on December 22, 1964 and performed all over the country, took home numerous pageant crowns (she was title holder for pageants including: Miss Gay USA, Miss Continental USA, Texas Entertainer of the Year and Miss Gay National), and was also featured as a guest on television shows like Sally Jesse Raphael, Jerry Springer, Joan Rivers, and Geraldo in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. She passed away on February 15, 1995 leaving behind a legacy of drag excellence. She was 30 years old.
Here’s Roxxxy’s grandmother Tandi’s performance at the Miss Gay National 1994, which she also won, which includes a fierce Wonder Woman entrance and tribute, a little Whitney, and, of course, “Holding Out For A Hero.” You can see where Roxxy got her inspiration from… just watch for the hair flips!
Clearly royalty runs in the family.
Of course, Tandi Andrews is not the only drag queen noted for her memorable performance of “Holding Out For A Hero”… there’s also Drag Race season 14 contestant Tamisha Iman’s drag mother Tandi Iman Dupree and her very viral performance of “Holding Out for a Hero,” which she performed at the 2001 Miss Gay Black America pageant. You can read the back story the legendary drag queen Tandi Iman Dupree and her epic “Holding Out For A Hero” performance here.
