Elliot Page Signs On To Produce Peppermint’s New Documentary

Page is the latest producer to support Peppermint’s project which also has Bob The Drag Queen’s production company attached…

Elliot Page’s PAGEBOY Productions has announced it is executive producing former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Peppermint’s new documentary. A Deeper Love: The Story of Miss Peppermint, premieres this week at San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ film festival Frameline49.

The 80-minute documentary, which examines Peppermint’s life, was written, directed and produced by Oriel Pe’er. Other producers on the film include Marc Smolowitz, Bob The Drag Queen’s production company Purse First Studios and Peppermint herself.

A film about trans strength and joy

A trailblazer, Peppermint was the first openly trans woman on RuPaul’s Drag Race when she competed on season 9. She was also the first trans woman to originate a principal role on Broadway in the musical Head Over Heels.

The documentary takes viewers through the raw and joyful moments of her journey prior to these milestones. From her life in New York, time as a sex worker to how she funded her transition and competing on Drag Race, the documentary shows the queen’s evolution into a star and activist. “After nine years in the making, this is my heart on screen,” the Drag Race runner-up shared on Instagram. “It’s my story celebrating trans strength and joy and truth.”

The film will feature unreleased footage and candid interviews with Peppermint. It will have appearances by actresses Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black) and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Pose) and her Drag Race sisters Sasha Velour and Shea Couleé.

The timing of the film comes as the United States government tries to erase trans people and limit rights for the community. “It’s more important than ever to show up, show out, and sell this baby out,” Peppermint said on Instagram. “Let’s pack the house with pride and power!”

Elliot Page continues to bring queer stories to life

PAGEBOY Productions, started by Canadian Elliot Page, focuses on projects that champion underrepresented voices. The company’s goal is to “develop and produce entertaining, original, commercial and socially responsible stories.”

The company has been behind titles such Backspot with Devery Jacobs and Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story. It has a number of projects in development including the upcoming Paramount+ series Len & Cub, about a secret gay love story in early 20th century rural New Brunswick, and a VR series called When Brooklyn Was Queer based on the book by Hugh Ryan.

Last month, Bell Media announced it would air Slo Pitch, from PAGEBOY Productions and Shaftesbury. The 10 episode comedy follows a queer underdog slo pitch team, who chase their dreams of making it to the beer league championships.
