TSO Kicks Off The Holidays With Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker: Land of Sweets

The music of the beloved ballet classic (including “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Waltz of the Flowers”) comes to life at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on November 27, 28 and 30…

Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition that seems as old as Christmas trees and mistletoe. For many, the iconic music from the classic 1892 ballet and the visions of sugarplums and snowflakes, flowers and a fairyland truly set the tone for the season.

If you’re looking for a night out in Toronto that’s anything but ordinary, the TSO may have exactly what you’re looking for. Its beloved holiday programming is kicking off this season with music from the timeless ballet suite The Nutcracker (Act II) with their production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker: Land of Sweets, which will take over the stage at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on Wednesday, November 27; Thursday, November 28; and Saturday, November 30, 2024.

For those in need of a li’l reminder: in the second act of The Nutcracker, the main characters, Clara and the Prince, arrive at the Land of Sweets, where they are welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy. Audiences can expect the symphony to bring celebrated Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s music from the beloved ballet classic to life with familiar favourites including “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Waltz of the Flowers.”

That’s not all – the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, one of Canada’s leading youth orchestras, will also be joining the fun for a performance of Polovtsian Dances from Alexander Borodin’s unfinished masterpiece Prince Igor.

Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker: Land of Sweets is part of the TSO’s Masterworks programming, which features classic concerts, timeless masterpieces and bold contemporary works throughout the year…with every performance offering audiences a fresh, exhilarating live music experience. In addition to the classical concerts, the TSO also has a vibrant Pops Series, Young People’s Concerts and Relaxed Performances, and even presents feature-length films where they perform the score live as the film is playing!
