Montreal’s First Trans Film Festival, Exposures, Debuts September 19-22, 2024

The inaugural edition of the Exposures Trans Film Festival is set to take place from September 19 to 22 at Espace Transmission in Montreal…

Mark your calendars! The inaugural edition of the Exposures Trans Film Festival is set to take place from Thursday, September 19 to Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Espace Transmission, Montreal. This groundbreaking event marks the first-ever trans film festival in the city, and one of only six trans-focused film festivals worldwide.

Founded by trans and queer cinema scholar Iris Pint, Exposures Trans Film Festival will feature 13 different screenings (3 feature film premieres and 10 short film programs), bringing together a diverse selection of films that delve into the experiences, aesthetics, and issues that resonate with trans communities globally. This first festival edition brings to Montreal a whopping 80 films total, all made by or with trans, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse folks. The festival also includes parties, workshops, post-screening Q&As with filmmakers, and industry events.

The Exposures Trans Film Festival comes at a critical time. Countries worldwide, including several Canadian provinces, the US, and the UK, have introduced new policy changes that affect the rights of trans and gender- diverse people. Now more than ever, we need initiatives that support and champion the trans community.

The theme for the Exposures Trans Film Festival’s inaugural year is “Breaking New Ground.” This reflects the festival’s mission to redefine and broaden the understanding of trans cinema, as well as highlight the disruptive nature of this pioneering event.

Festival highlights include: three Canadian feature film premieres Dog Movie (US, 2023), Every Time I Die (Columbia, 2022), and One Day League: Dead Mother, Dead All (Philippines, 2024); 10 short film programs with a diverse range of themes including child-friendly cartoons, trans cowboys, love and desire, trans community and care, and trans ecologies; and a retrospective on Trans Quebecois filmmaking.

The Exposures Trans Film Festival will take place at Espace Transmission (5435 Av. des Érables, Montreal) from September 19-22, 2024. Attendees can choose between individual screening tickets ($12.50/screening), day passes which give access to all screenings on a given day ($39/day) or full festival passes ($99). Tickets, day passes and festival passes are all on sale now at exposuresmtl.com.
