Skyscanner is teaming up with Chappell Roan fans to convince the singer to perform in Saskatchewan after she namedrops the province…
In August, the world heard Chappell Roan sing “Well, f*ck this city. I’m movin’ to Saskatchewan.” Now, global travel app Skyscanner is teaming up with fans in an effort to convince the Grammy winner to make a “Saskatchewan DeTour.”
Roan is set to play two sold out shows in Pasadena today and tomorrow. On her way to the stadium she might notice a few billboards talking to her. Skyscanner purchased billboards close to the venue that read, “Hey Chappell, if you were serious… find flight deals to Saskatchewan,” and “Chappell, moving to Saskatchewan?”
The playful advertisements are one way the brand is manifesting a visit to the province. There will also be mobile trucks circling the concert venue and in high traffic areas with the message.
Roan is currently doing shows for her Visions of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things tour across the United States. Starting in November she’ll hit the festival circuit in Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Chile and Brazil. While there are no dates in Canada, Skyscanner is hoping the campaign will have her reconsidering.
In a February interview with Nardwuar The Human Serviette, the artist suggested she might in fact perform in the province. “I was looking at venues there to try to play a show there,” she told Nardwuar. “I cannot sing a show about Saskatchewan and not go there and play a show.”
Last month on The Zane Lowe Show, the singer promised to perform there one day. In terms of the city, it’ll likely be Regina because she loves the name. We hope she knows the city doesn’t have a subway system.
Why did Chappell Roan mention Saskatchewan?
The unusual choice of place has become a major talking point with the press. Speaking to Zane Lowe, the artist admitted she has never been to the province, but that it was time it got global recognition.
When asked why she chose Saskatchewan, Roan said it was because it rhymed. The artist noted she was trying to find something with an ‘on’ sound to rhyme with the word ‘gone.’ While they landed on Saskatchewan, many locals have politely called out her incorrect pronunciation of the fourth syllable.
What has Chappell’s impact been on the province?
The song has been a major boost for the trapezoid-shaped province in terms of online traffic. Tourism Saskatchewan reported 230 social media mentions and almost 40,000 interactions related to the region in the days leading to the song’s release.
“It’s great news for our province,” CEO of Tourism Saskatchewan Jonathan Potts told ABC News. “It’s a lot of fun to have such a wonderful, popular artist singing our praises and giving the opportunity to tell the story of Saskatchewan.” The organization also noted people had been searching “moving to Saskatchewan” worldwide.
In response to the song, Tourism Saskatchewan launched a new campaign. “Exploring Saskatchewan Based on Your Favourite Chappell Roan Song,” pairs popular songs by the artist with destinations that match the vibe and energy.
