Velma Is Now Officially A Lesbian In The New ‘Scooby-Doo’ Animated Film

Jinkies! The beloved brainiac develops a crush on a female felon in Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!

It’s official. Scooby-Doo‘s Velma is officially a lesbian. In the just-released movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, Velma (voiced by Kate Micucci) falls head over heels for costume designer Coco Diablo (voiced by Myrna Velasco), the brilliant leader of a “notorious costume crime syndicate.” Clips from the movie are currently making the rounds on social media, with fans rejoicing that the suspicions held by the “Scooby” fan base for decades have finally been confirmed.

Though the character has mostly been paired with fleeting male love interests over the years, there has been subtext suggesting her lack of interest.

Plus, it’s long been an open secret among fans and Scooby-Doo creatives that Velma is gay. Even James Gunn, who wrote the early live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on the ‘Mystery Incorporated’ series, have confirmed the character’s sexuality, but they were never able to make it official onscreen.

In 2020, Gunn tweeted that he “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the live-action movies. “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

During Pride Month in 2020, Cervone wrote on Instagram, “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why. There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.”

Per this new movie’s official description: “Mystery Inc. has cracked the case to top all cases! They’ve tracked down Coco Diablo, the head of the notorious costume crime syndicate that colludes The Black Knight, Space Kook and the Ghost Diver. With Coco and her kitty in prison, Mystery Inc. thinks that they can finally enjoy a break. Wrong! Suddenly, menacing doppelgänger ghosts of the Scooby crew and favorite classic foes show up in Coolsville to threaten Halloween. Now it’s up to the meddling kids — and their unlikely new partner Coco — to unmask the latest scoundrel and save Halloween! For Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, with trick-or-treating on the line – this time it’s personal!”

Warner Bros.’ Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo is out now and available to rent or purchase on Prime Video.
