Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’ Has Been Renewed For Seasons 2 And 3

The breakout LGBTQ TV series just got a major season 2 and season 3 renewal order from Netflix…

It’s official. Netflix has renewed the supremely joyful coming-of-age story Heartstopper for two additional seasons. Multi-season renewals are rare at the streamer, and the one for Heartstopper is a testament to the romantic comedy-drama checking all the boxes as a Netflix success story.

Heartstopper launched on April 22 with eight 30-minute episodes, all based on Alice Oseman’s beloved Tumblr web-comic-turned-graphic-novel. The LGBTQ-themed young adult show became an instant sensation around the world, ranking on the streaming platform’s top 10 list in an impressive 54 countries. It also became one of the few series to score the coveted and incredibly rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics universally praising the show.

Hearstopper’s creator Alice Oseman helps announce the return of Nick and Charlie on NetflixThose of you who have already binged the eight half-hour episodes that make up Season 1 (perhaps multiple times?) already know that the show follows teenagers Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as they go from deskmates to boyfriends.

Oseman will return as writer and executive producer for both Seasons 2 and 3.

It has catapulted Connor and Locke into social media stars, with both actors now tallying 3.4 million and 2.5 million Instagram followers, respectively. The success of Heartstoper has also helped to fuel weekly book sales of Oseman’s source material, with volume one of the book currently holding the top spot on the U.S. YA fiction list and featured on the New York Times best-seller chart. Weekly sales have increased 1,700 percent.

Season 1 of Heartstopper covers material from the first two volumes in Alice Oseman’s graphic-novel (and webcomic) series. There remain two more published volumes, plus a final fifth volume that is due out in February 2023. Nick and Charlie’s story has also continued in Oseman’s published novellas. Her debut novel, Solitaire, was the first to introduce the characters, focusing on Charlie’s scene-stealing older sister Tori, who sprinkles “older sister magic” throughout Heartstopper. There are also the Nick and Charlie and This Winter novellas which continue to tell the story of the characters.
