RuPaul Is Headed To The Big Screen On The Glamazonian Express

World of Wonder is expanding the Drag Race universe with a feature film directed by Adam Shankman and starring RuPaul…

World of Wonder is hoping fans will sissy that walk to their local theatres next year for first the feature film in the Drag Race universe.

Earlier this summer, World of Wonder founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato teased to Variety an expansion of the franchise. They shared dreams of taking the Drag Race universe to Broadway and the big screen. In the interview, Bailey suggested a film was already being shot in Los Angeles. Now, we have official confirmation a movie is in the works along with a plot and casting update.

What is the Drag Race film about?

The unnamed Drag Race film is being described as an action-comedy. Directing the feature will be Hairspray director Adam Shankman, who has guest judged on various Drag Race franchises. In a statement Shankman said “When they [World of Wonder] asked me to come aboard this hilarious and truly unhinged project, in a time so desperate for escapist entertainment and laughter, I couldn’t resist.”

The film follows best friends Tess and DeeDee. The pair are train stewardesses who trade their dreary shifts on the Stank Rail for the glitzy Glamazonian Express. When ‘Stormganza’ threatens to derail the high-speed train into Los Angeles, the duo in coach must join forces with the snobby first class attendants, and President Gagwell, to save the day.

Who will star in the Drag Race film?

RuPaul will star as President Gagwell, a part the iconic queen says she was “born to play.” “Finally, a role I can sink my dentures into,” RuPaul said in a statement. The iconic drag queen is no stranger to the big screen. She has starred in and out of drag in films like The Brady Bunch Movie and But I’m a Cheerleader.

No other casting details were revealed. Though we assume former Drag Race contestants will make an appearance.
