'Canada’s Drag Race' Star Aimee Yoncé Shennel Shares Her Trans Journey

‘Canada’s Drag Race’ Star Aimee Yoncé Shennel Shares Her Trans Journey

The season four queen came out as trans privately six months ago and is now sharing the news publicly to the world…

Fresh off multiple appearances at Ottawa’s Capital Pride this past weekend, Aimee Yoncé Shennel has announced that she is a trans woman. The Canada’s Drag Race contestant publicly shared the news on her Instagram and has since been flooded with messages of love and support.

“A woman has been born,” the Instagram caption starts. The queen explains how the decision took her over a decade to make and how she finally wanted to stop suffering and be her true self. “Six months ago I opened my arms and I welcomed this beautiful woman who was imprisoned inside me.”

The queen admits she was scared to come out, noting how the decision would be life changing and have potential consequences. “It was simply easier to be a gay man and not have to face the hatred and rejection that the trans community experiences everyday,” she wrote. “But something was missing, something was wrong.”

Aimee Yoncé Shennel said she kept the news private for half a year to focus on herself and the process. She called those months the best of her life. “I am free. I am my true self.”

She closed the post thanking the Ottawa community as well as her friends.

The queen also posted an Instagram thanking season four sister Kiki Coe and her husband. “They knew how scared I was about making that decision, but they also knew how unhappy I was…” she said in part on Instagram.

She also recalls how Kiki was there when she did her first estrogen shot. “Six months ago I got my HRT (estrogen) and I went to their house and together we did my first shot and my journey as a trans woman began.”

What are Aimee’s Drag Race sisters saying?

The 2SLGBTQI+ community immediately started liking the post and leaving congratulatory comments. Her drag aunt Brooke Lynn Hytes left three heart emojis, one for each colour of the trans flag, and wrote “Congratulations niece”

Her season four sisters also left messages. Third/fourth place contestant Denim wrote “so proud of you sister,” while winner Venus said “so happy for you babe.” Runner-up Aurora Matrix wrote “MY SISTER FR FR 🩷🤍🩵 proud of you and so happy.”

Reigning Miss Congeniality Jaylene Tyme also left a message. “Sister!!!! 🏳️‍⚧️✊🏽❤️ I love this and you!! Keep rising!!!”
