The hit global film premiered two years ago and now its author is teasing the upcoming sequel
It’s been two years since the Emmy nominated film Red, White & Royal Blue premiered. Now, its author Casey McQuiston is sharing some exciting details on the upcoming sequel.
For those needing a reminder, the first film follows the relationship between Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), son of the US president, and Prince Henry (Nick Galitzine), a British Royal. After Alex has an embarrassing encounter with Prince Henry, he is forced to fix the situation to save US/UK relations and his mother’s re-election. As Alex and Prince Henry try to fix the mistake, their relationship turns from hatred to love. The pair must then navigate their budding love for each other while keeping their appearances in the public eye.
While the first film is based on the book by the same name, the sequel will be an original screenplay as McQuiston never released a follow up. In an interview with Yahoo! Queer Voices, the author shared that they are co-writing the script with director Matthew López.
The author shared, ever so mysteriously, what they are planning. “I think what you can expect from the sequel is a glimpse into Alex and Henry’s life after the confetti has finished falling from the first movie,” McQuiston told Yahoo! Queer Voices. “You have to move forward together as two adults in a real serious adult partnership.”
The couple’s relationship will be tested as the pair are pulled in different directions. The two will need to navigate the “pressures and expectations and dreams that might be coming into conflict with each other.”
Beyond that, the author is keeping mum on the sequel. There is no word on how far along McQuiston and López are in the development process. A release date has not been announced either.
What is the cast of Red, White & Royal Blue saying?
Fans are not the only one’s waiting in anticipation for the sequel. During the press tour for The Old Guard 2, Uma Thurman told Letterboxd, she’s ready to step back into the Oval Office as the US President. “When it’s ready, I will do it. We don’t know what Ellen [her character] will be up to, but yeah.”
It’s unclear whether Thurman’s comment means she’s officially returning, or manifesting it. Zakhar Perez and Galitzine are the only two confirmed cast members so far.
When asked by ELLE in May if he knew anything, Zakhar Perez told the publication he didn’t want to know. “I purposefully said, ‘Please do not share with me anything until we are ready to prep it, because I want plausible deniability.’”
How big is the Red, White & Royal Blue fandom?
The book and film were both breakout hits. Released in 2019, the novel was received positively, landing on the New York Times Best Sellers list. The novel also blew up on BookTok, the book community on TikTok, gaining a massive following. It was added to the Library of Congress LGBTQ+ collection for preservation in 2023.
Fans went wild after the casting of Zakhar Perez and Galitzine, creating videos of the pair by splicing together old footage of them. “People lined up outside of a hotel in Paris to get a picture, because they loved Alex Claremont-Diaz so much,” Zakhar Perez continued telling ELLE. “That speaks volumes about what these two characters mean to those who watch it.”
When the film premiered on Prime Video, it spent three weeks as the top watched film worldwide on the platform. It still pops into the Top 10 most watched movies on occasion in various countries.
The obsession for Alex and Prince Henry’s love story is undeniable and fans cannot wait for the sequel. For those wanting constant updates on the film, the “Red, White & Royal Blue Updates” X account posts everything and anything related to it.
