Meet The First Ever ‘King Of Drag’

After six weeks, the first ever drag king competition series has crowned its inaugural winner and it is…

While Drag Race franchises globally have named over 70 drag queens as winners, there is only King of Drag…so far.

King Molasses was named the first winner of the Revry series King of Drag hosted by Murray Hill. They won the competition over six episodes, beating 10 other contestants for the title.

The Washington, DC king started the competition strong, but lost momentum near the end. They won the boy band and impersonator Beefy Challenges back-to-back and were in the top the following week. They landed in the bottom two in the episodes leading up to the final.

In the end, after a final lip sync to the King of Drag theme song, King Molasses beat Dick von Dyke. They were crowned in front of Gottmik, Kylie Sonique Love and The Real Housewives Lisa Rinna.

What is King Molasses saying about their win?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly after the finale, King Molasses said winning TV’s first drag king competition didn’t feel different from a normal day, but talked about the importance of the show. “This moment is so much bigger than me in terms of what this cast represents in media and the show’s groundbreaking nature. I situate myself as someone who works hard, and this is what comes with hard work…”

When it came to what they want their reign to represent, the performer just wants people to know drag kings are no different than drag queens. “I want my reign to establish our credibility as artists. We’re always going to be compared to drag queens, but I want my reign to put to bed the ambiguity about what a drag king is,” they told EW. “You will not inherently think we’re inferior to a drag queen.”

What is King of Drag?

Hosted by Murray Hill, the series premiered on June 22. The competition saw kings showcase their comedy talents, while giving audiences unconventional performances and providing commentary on masculinity. The 10 contestants represented transmasculine people, cisgender women, nonbinary individuals and more.

Helping Hill throughout the competition was “The King’s Court.” The permanent judging panel included drag king’s Tenderoni and Wang Newton, Revry co-founder and CEO Damian Pelliccione and RuPaul’s Drag Race alums Sasha Velour (winner of season 9) and Gottmik (season 13 and All Stars 9). Guest judges included Carmen Carrera (RuPaul’s Drag Race season three), Cole Escola (Oh! Mary), Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets), Jeff Hiller (American Horror Stories) and more.

A second season has not been given the greenlight by Revry yet, but fans are hoping they’ll see more drag kings on their TV soon.

You can watch all six episodes of King of Drag on Revry.
