The queens put on a rootin’ tootin’ performance at a country music festival. Choreographer Jamal Sims is a guest judge…
Last week we were introduced to our final bracket of queens in the All Stars tournament. They changed the game For Good when they competed in a Wicked inspired challenge in pairs all while the witches of Oz, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo guest judged. Ginger and Daya Betty impressed the judges the most, which is why they were named the top all stars of the week. This week, the queens will jump back in the studio when they compete in a country music challenge. Let’s get into it.
This week’s episode begins back in the werk room where we’re met with last week’s safe queens over on the couches. The time to distribute their MVQ points is coming up, and they’re discussing strategy. Cynthia thinks she and Alyssa should have been the top, but asks the other queens how they’re thinking of giving their points away. Acid Betty doesn’t want to give any of her points to the winners since they’re already ahead. Ginger and Daya enter and Ginger is feeling good with her three points. Daya asks the other queens to distribute and Cynthia starts by giving her point to Alyssa. Denali gives hers to Acid Betty. Acid gives hers to Denali. Finally, Alyssa gives hers to Cynthia, so every point is distributed equally. With only two weeks left, everyone is feeling a little antsy about how the points will go out, and the competition only gets hotter from here.
It’s a new day and the queens are ready to take on another challenge. Around the table, the girls ask Ginger if she feels like there’s a target on her back and she thinks there is but it’s also still anyone’s game. Ru interrupts and lets the queens know that the cult classic Clueless is turning 30 years old, so to celebrate, the queens will get into quick drag to pay homage to the film in this week’s mini challenge. After a photoshoot with a lot of yellow plaid, Ru announces the winner of the mini challenge is Denali. Ru also tells the queens that for this week’s maxi challenge they’ll work in two groups to introduce two new country bangers at the all new music festival Stagecooch. They’ll write their own verses, record the music, and work with a choreographer to tie their performance together.
Over on the couches the queens listen to both songs. Denali is excited as she loves to write music. After listening to both songs five out of the six queens want one song. Daya moves over to the other team with Cynthia, and after Ginger senses how stressed Alyssa is, she moves over to the other team as well. Breaking off into their teams, they workshop their individual verses. Each group thinks they have the advantage, but they’re pretty evenly stacked, so this could still be anybody’s challenge. After writing the queens head to the recording studio to lay down their tracks, where Country music star Orville Peck is there to help them through the process. The Key Your Car girls are first with Daya Betty leading the way, and she sets the bar high. Ginger is up next and she nails her part. Cynthia is last and needs a little help from the producers but gets there with a strong finish. Next, the Trailer Hitch girls are next with Acid Betty starting. She has a little trouble finding her key, pitch, or tempo which thrills the other team. Denali impresses Orville with her lyrics and finally Alyssa starts her session by flirting with Orville, before revealing she’ll need a lot of help in the booth.
Back out on the main stage they work in their groups to choreograph their performances. Daya has taken the lead, but Ginger also does some of the directing. It’s giving too many cooks in the kitchen. Denali leads her group and they work really well together, picking up the steps and getting the timing down really quick, which makes Ginger, Daya, and Cynthia a little nervous. It’s runway/performance day and both groups are feeling like they’re in a really good spot. Over at the mirrors, they break into smaller groups and talk strategy and Acid suggests pooling the MVQ points to give someone a leg up. Daya and Ginger talk about keeping themselves at the top.
Out on the main stage, Ru introduces this week’s panel Michelle, Ross, and this week’s extra special guest judge choreographer Jamal Sims. The Stagecooch festival opens and it’s time for a hoedown throwdown. The Mudflaps (Ginger, Daya, and Cynthia) are up first with Key Your Car. Their lyrics are strong and while their choreography is simple, they all seem to be hitting their marks on time. Next, The Whiskey Chicks (Acid, Denali, and Alyssa) sing their song Trailer Hitch. All three do a good job, but Denali is the standout of the group. After the performances, the category on the runway is “Night of 1000 Mileys”, and the queens strut one by one in their best Miley Cyrus tribute looks.
Critiques start with Acid Betty. Ru loves her runway, and Michelle compliments her performance, which Jamal echoes. Ross tells Alyssa she was serving beauty and comedy which he loved, but Michelle wishes she would have rapped her verse. Michelle thanks Denali for bringing the Miley they all wanted to see to the runway, and Ross tells her she had his favourite lyrics of the night. Jamal compliments her on her choreography for the group. Michelle tells Cynthia her lyrics told a story, and Ross loved her voice in the recording. All the judges loved Daya’s performance and runway look and Michelle says she’s so proud of how far she’s come since her season. Finally, Michelle tells Ginger she loves the way she does drag, and Jamal calls her performance equal parts sexy and funny.
Following deliberations Ru announces the top two queens of the week are Denali and Ginger. The two top queens lip sync for the extra point to “See You Again” by Miley Cyrus. Each queen brings their own strength and style to the lip sync with Denali taking a more acrobatic approach, while Ginger commands the stage with her comedic take on the song. In the end Ru awards the extra point to Ginger Minj for the second week in a row.
Next week on All Stars: It’s the final week of brackets! It’s an acting challenge and tensions rise in the werk room when points need to be distributed.
