Gascón, who is up for best actress for her role in Emilia Pérez, has come under fire during this award season…
Although she skipped the red carpet, Karla Sofía Gascón attended the 97th annual Academy Awards on Sunday evening. The embattled star is nominated for best actress for her performance in Jacques Audiard’s genre-blending musical Emilia Pérez, the first openly trans actress to land an Academy Award acting nod.
Gascón first appeared on the screen during Conan O’Brien’s opening monologue, after the comedian made a joke about the number of f-bombs her team likely uttered this award season.
“[Best picture nominee] Anora uses f-word 479 times — that’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist,” O’Brien joked. He then spoke directly to Gascón as the camera locked onto her in the crowd, saying. “If you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”
Gascón popped back up on screens during the acceptance speech for Best Original song, clapping for winners Camille and Clément Ducol while they accepted the award for “El Mal” from Emilia Pérez. The couple thanked Gascón during their speech.
Gascón received serious backlash after several tweets from 2020 and 2021 went viral in the wake of her historic Oscar nomination. They included hateful messages about Muslims, diversity at the Oscars and the death of George Floyd. She quickly offered an apology after fiercely defended herself, reiterating, “I am not a racist.”:
“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” Gascón said in a statement from Netflix. “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
Gascón skipped the red carpet tonight, however inside the Dolby Theatre tonight reportedly two reporters approached her, one from the New York Times and asked: “How are you feeling about being here tonight?” “I’m fine, I’m fine,” Gascón smiled pleasantly. Before she could say more, a Netflix publicist interjected. “We’re not doing interviews. I hope you understand.” Gascón smiled, took her drink, winked at the reporters, blew a kiss and returned to the ballroom.
In Emilia Pérez, Gascón, who is transgender, plays a Mexican cartel boss who fakes her death and undergoes a gender-affirming surgery, later attempting to reconnect with her family and right the wrongs of her past. The film received 13 Oscar nominations, the most of any other film, including best picture and best director.
