Here are some of the queer films and TV series that are on our radar in the new year…
As we celebrate the dawn of a new year, reflecting on how far we’ve come as a community is always a nice way to begin a new phase of the calendar. Representation in media for 2SLGBTQI+ folks seems to be at an all-time high, coinciding with newfound complications for the community in countries seeking to roll back protections for certain individuals. Now more than ever, it’s increasingly important to support queer content, especially when the list of movies and television shows debuting in 2025 appears to be one for the ages.
Here is a list of some titles to look out for in 2025.

The Wedding Banquet
Director Andrew Ahn made a splash in 2022 with the stellar gay romantic comedy, Fire Island, and he’s come back to the genre by remaking the 1993 classic, The Wedding Banquet. Along with writer James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain) and actors Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Bowen Yang, Ahn’s newest film will debut at the Sundance Film Festival before releasing in theaters later in 2025. The film follows a gay Taiwanese-American (Yang) who decides to marry a woman for a green card. Of course, not everything goes according to plan as the bride and groom’s parents arrive to attend the wedding, creating chaos for the closeted groom.
The Wedding Banquet will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January before releasing theatrically on April 18, 2025.

Kiss of the Spider Woman
Another Sundance title that looks to bring a fresh perspective to adapting a beloved film and novel is director Bill Condon’s highly anticipated Kiss of the Spider Woman. Taking place in an Argentinian prison circa 1981, the film about an imprisoned gay hairdresser (Tonatiuh) who daydreams of classic movies, forming an unlikely kinship with another male prisoner, sheds light on Argentina’s violent past. Kiss of the Spider Woman will also star Jennifer Lopez as a classic screen legend and Andor actor Diego Luna.
Kiss of the Spider Woman will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January before releasing theatrically in late 2025.

The White Lotus – Season 3
Out writer and director Mike White has created one of the more iconic television shows in recent memory, The White Lotus. After two successful seasons, the second of which ended with the gays trying to kill poor Jennifer Coolidge, the internationally-set series will return for a third season in 2025. A large ensemble that includes Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Leslie Bibb, Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and returning champion Natasha Rothwell, the series will move to Thailand as Mike White explores more of his characters’ sexuality and tension to fit the anthology structure.
The White Lotus Season 3 will premiere on HBO on February 16, 2025.

On Swift Horses
Premiering last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, On Swift Horses stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Will Poulter as a married couple, Muriel and Lee, whose lives are turned upside down when they move to California with the hopes that Lee’s brother (Jacob Elordi) will move with them. Elordi’s character, Julius, a Korean War veteran living a double life as a gay man, chooses to move to Las Vegas instead. While the family is separated from one another, Muriel begins a double life of her own, exploring her sexuality with a female neighbor while betting on horses at the local track. On Swift Horses balances secrets and lies while depicting 1950s queer America in a new light.
On Swift Horses will release theatrically on July 25, 2025.

Wicked: For Good
After a blockbuster experience at the box office in 2024, Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Wicked will see its second chapter released in 2025. Starring queer actors Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, and Cynthia Erivo and performances by Ariana Grande and Michelle Yeoh, the sequel will wrap up the propaganda story between Elphaba and Glinda. The second part of the highly anticipated musical will explore new identities, specifically Elphaba’s Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The latest film will be a showcase for queer recognition at the highest levels of mainstream cinema.
Wicked: For Good will release theatrically on November 21, 2025.
