RuPaul's Drag Race Season 17 Episode 2 RECAP: Drag Queens Got Talent

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 Episode 2 RECAP: Drag Queens Got Talent

The second group of new queens showcase their talent on the main stage. Musician Doechii is a guest judge…

Last week we were introduced to a brand new cast of queens with the premiere of season 17. The first half of the queens showed us their best stuff with a good ol’ fashioned talent show, which was guest judged by Katy Perry. Also returning is the Rate-A-Queen system, which saw the queens who weren’t performing rank their competitors based on their talents. Acacia Forgot was rated as the bottom queen while Jewels Sparkles and Suzie Toot lip synced for the top spot, with Suzie winning. This week, the other half of the queens will have a chance to show us what they’ve got when they hit the main stage for part two of Drag Queens Got Talent, and the first queen of the season is going home. Let’s get into it.

This week’s episode begins in the werk room. Suzie is feeling on top of the world for winning the first challenge of the season, and she thanks the other queens for voting for her. Jewels is also feeling good about being in the top of the week. Acacia says she’s feeling down about being the bottom queen even though she was the only one with the balls to sing live. Suzie tells them all that next week the tables will be turned because the week one performers take to the rating booth.

It’s a new day in the werk room and the week one performers are ready to take this week to relax and rate the other queens. Suzie and Jewel both express how excited they are to rate the other girls in a private conversation. The queens immediately start getting ready for the talent show and Kori says she’s not below begging and bartering for votes and reveals she’s grown fond of Lydia’s company. Hormona tells some of the other queens that she’s planning on doing stand-up comedy for her talent and the other queens aren’t sure. Acacia knows she’s lip syncing tonight but she’s mentally prepared herself for it. Bagpipes interrupt their talking which can only mean one thing. Drag Race UK season 2 winner Lawrence Chaney enters the werk room in purple plaid to tell the queens that by the end of the night one of the queens will be going home but she has a question that will change the game forever. A box lifts up to reveal a rooster statue and asks if it’s cake or cock. This announcement can only mean one thing… Tonight on the runway, the category is “Is It Cake?”, meaning the queens will have to walk in outfits that showcase their booties.

Arrietty and Lucky get a little flirty by the mirrors and have a conversation about top versus bottom bunks (wink wink). Things get playfully shady and Kori is playing Miss Congeniality until the votes are revealed. Some of the queens are nervous, but most of them are excited to reveal their talents to Ru and the other girls. Lexi Love tells some of the other queens she’s rollerskating on the mainstage for her talent and she’s a little nervous about slipping on the thick surface. In the corner a few of the other queens voice their concern about it being a little dangerous. Joella and Acacia talk strategy before Acacia works the room asking the other queens what their talents are, and later reveals to the group if she had to pick a queen to lip sync against, she’d choose Hormona.

Out on the main stage Ru introduces this week’s judges panel Michelle, Ts Madison, and this week’s extra special guest judge, musician Doechii! Category is “Is It Cake?” and all of the queens show off their cake with sexy and camp looks that showcase their best ASSets. Multiple queens decided on Marie Antoinette looks which Michelle doesn’t look too pleased with. Following the runway it’s time for the second part of Drag Queens Got Talent. First up is Sam Star performing western-inspired original pop number ending with an impressive shablam off a bale of hay. Onya Nerve is next with another original song/rap combo which Ru and the rest of the judges are living for. Crystal Envy goes third, with you guessed it, another original song, but the production on this one is pretty good. Hormona Lisa finally takes the stage with her stand-up comedy routine. It gets a couple of laughs but it’s seriously slacking on the jokes. Next Kori King takes the stage with an original song and dance routine. Lana Ja’Rae follows with her original song and intergalactic performance. Last Lexi Love takes the stage in her rollerskates to perform an original song and she absolutely eats it up in what is arguably one of the best acts of all of the queens.

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 17 Episode 2 RECAP Drag Queens Got Talent - 3

Following all of the performances there are once again no judges critiques because the week one queens are immediately heading back to lock their ratings in. The judges privately talk about each of their talents and runways with mostly good things to say about all of this week’s queens (except Hormona Lisa’s comedy routine), and yes, Michelle addresses the Marie Antoinette costumes and begs Ru to please ask the queens to stop bringing it to the runway. Backstage, we see bits and pieces of the queen’s rating decisions.

Back out on the main stage Ru calls Lexi Love and Crystal Envy forward and tells them they are the top two queens of the week based on the Rate-A-Queen results. First Lexi and Crystal have to lip sync for the victory to Alter Ego by Doechii and it’s very high-energy. Both queens are tearing it UP. Ru announces that the winner of this week’s challenge is Lexi Love! Crystal is safe to slay another day. The remaining queens come back to the front of the stage. Ru and calls forward Sam Star, Onya Nerve, Kori King, and Lana Ja’Rae to tell them they are all safe.

Hormona Lisa has been rated the bottom queen of the week, which means she’s lip synching against Acacia Forgot.

The two bottom queens lip sync for their life to yes, and? By Ariana Grande. Acacia goes more bold with her movements and stunts including pulling a makeup brush out of her butt to touch up her makeup while Horomona goes more subtle with her performance. RuPaul announces that Acacia has won the lip sync and is safe. She then asks Hormona if she’s feeling lucky, because she’s giving her one last chance to bandonk-a-dunk her way back into the competition and reveals Michelle sitting above a dunk tank behind a curtain. Hormona is given 10 levers, two of which will drop Michelle into the tank. If Horomona chooses a correct lever, she’ll get to stay in the competition. If Michelle stays dry, she’ll go home. After carefully choosing, Horomona pulls lever number seven, which swiftly dunks Michelle into the tank, meaning she gets to stay at least one more week, and none of the queens are happy about it.

Next week on RuPaul’s Drag Race: The queens take on a sewing challenge inspired by Monopoly, they get a peak at how everyone voted in Rate-A-Queen, and icon Sandra Bernhard is a guest judge.
