Canada’s Drag Race Canada vs The World Season 2 Episode 5 RECAP: Snatch Game: The Rusical

Canada’s Drag Race Canada vs The World Season 2 Episode 5 RECAP: Snatch Game: The Rusical

The remaining queens compete in a challenge that combines two Drag Race staples and musician Alessia Cara is a guest judge…

Last week the queens read each other to filth in the show’s first ever Reading Battle which saw the final six go head to head and roast each other in front of a live audience and a panel of judges. Kennedy took the top spot this week when her quick-witted roasting impressed the judges. After Kennedy presented the golden beaver to Alexis, the bottom two queens were Miss Fiercalicious and Eureka and following a lively lip sync, Eureka was sent packing. This week the final five will take on a mega challenge that blends two iconic Drag Race events in one. Let’s get into it.

This week’s episode begins in the werk room following Eureka’s elimination. Fierce reads her message on the mirror but she feels bad sending her home since she became her closest friend in the competition. The competition is getting tighter and a lot of the queens are realizing any of them could go home next. Over on the couches the queens tell Fierce that her lip sync was legendary and she should be proud of herself. Now there’s two Canadians, two Americans, and one Brit left in the competition and everyone is feeling the pressure as it comes to a close. Lemon is feeling very proud of herself for rising above this season and Kennedy tells her the preparation she’s done is obvious and impressive.

It’s a new day and the final five queens are feeling ready to take on a new challenge. A few of the queens mention for the first time they’re actually having fun in the competition. Alexis reminds everyone that this is the last week to use the golden beaver which will guarantee one queen’s spot in the finale next week. After Ru’s video message, Brooke enters the room to tell the queens that for this week’s main challenge the queens will perform in Snatch Game: The Rusical. The queens will have to give their best impression while also singing and dancing with choreography by Canada’s resident Dancing King Hollywood Jade. The queens head over to the blue couches to read through the scripts and listen to the music. They’ll have to act as themselves and also as different characters for the Snatch Game portion of the musical. Fierce says she thinks this will alleviate some of the pressure Snatch Game puts on them since it’s a bit more structured, and some of the other queens feel the same. They all divide the roles up but Cheryl and Kennedy want the same role, but Cheryl sticks to her gut and won’t relinquish the role.

They break up into smaller groups to work on their characters and learn their songs. They’ve all brought their own characters to do and they have to make them work with the songs they’ve been assigned to. Brooke re-enters the room and checks in with the queens and their characters. Out on the main stage the queens work one-on-one with Hollywood Jade with their choreography. During this challenge the queens will have to play slight parodies of themselves as well as impersonate a celebrity, so they’ll really have to sell it through the musical numbers. A few of the queens are nervous about getting the choreography down but they’ll get there in the end.

It’s elimination day and the queens are feeling ready to take this mega challenge on. While they’re getting their makeup on they talk about their support systems back home that give them the power they need to get through the competition. Alexis tells the other queens she doesn’t really have anyone at home because of choices she’s made. She protected her peace and she’s feeling comfortable in her loneliness but she also has her drag family that she can lean on in times of need. Out on the main stage Brooke introduces this week’s panel of judges, Brad, Sarain, and this week’s extra special guest judge Alessia Cara.

The rusical kicks off and the queens are all performing with their own vocals. Hollywood Jade is playing the role of Brooke Lynn in the rusical which adds some impressive choreography to the production. Aside from performing fully produced musical numbers, the queens have to improvise their answers as their characters and make the judges laugh. Musical numbers break up the actual game, so there’s a lot to take in, but all of the queens are doing a good job with the tight practice time. This format also allows the queens to have their own moments in the spotlight, which also doesn’t leave any space for them to hide. Alexis opened the show with a high-energy number which Lemon matched with her solo. Fierce put the effort in but didn’t exactly get to the same level. Kennedy stumbled her way through her number where she forgot the words to her lyric-heavy song but her choreography was the most impressive of the group and finally, Cheryl brings it home with her impressive finale power ballad.

Following the rusical, the category on the runway is “The Summer of ‘69” and the queens stun in their flower power vintage-inspired looks. Brooke congratulates everyone on an impressive challenge and critiques begin with Alexis. Brad tells her she started out with a bang and Brooke says her energy was infectious and she was so fun to watch. Alessia tells her that her voice was strong and Sarain says she hit her choreography but all of the judges agree her Baby Ron DeSantis character was too complicated for this specific challenge but they all agree her runway was fierce. Brad tells Lemon that her Susan Boyle was pure magic and Sarain says she got Susan’s infectious optimism down perfectly. All of the judges love her take on the runway and Brooke says she knocked it out of the park this week. Brooke tells Fierce that her choice to play Mother Theresa was a risk that the judges have been talking about all season. Sarain agrees that the look of the character was fabulous but she wants to see more magic from her. Alessia adored her habit snatch but Brooke says she was missing the fire in her eyes during her performance. Brad tells Kennedy he loved watching her perform especially with her tricks but Brooke clocks her for not knowing all the words to her song. Her Tabitha Brown character was also lacking energy that all of the judges noticed. Sarain says it was a joy watching her step into her power on the runway this week. Finally, Brad tells Cheryl she was wonderful this season and her improv skills shone. Sarain tells her she kept in character the whole challenge which was impressive and Alessia praises her vocals.

Based on the judges critiques, Brooke announces that the top queen of the week is Lemon! As the runner up, Cheryl is safe (and also heading to the finale). Lemon has earned the power of the golden beaver for the last time this weekend and must save one of the bottom three from elimination. Backstage, Feircalicious, Kennedy, and Alexis plead their case for the golden beaver. The queens are all proud of Lemon on her win and Cheryl tells her she does not envy her power this evening. Kennedy gets teary talking about how overwhelmed she is being in the bottom. Alexis cheers her up with some words of affirmation. Fierce says she’s proud of her performance this week and says she would love to have a chance to represent Canada in the finale. At this point in the competition it’s splitting hairs, so even though there’s still a bottom three this week, they all technically strong enough to make it to the finale. Kennedy feels that she’s worked hard to get there and she deserves the beaver.

Back out on the main stage Lemon reveals that the queen she has chosen to be in the finale with the golden beaver for the last time this season is… Kennedy. This means that Alexis and Fiercalicious are the bottom two of the week. They lip sync for their life to How Far I’ll Go by Alessia Cara. Both queens want a spot in the finale, so these performances are full of heart and passion. After a soulful lip sync the judges quickly deliberate and announce the fourth queen heading to the finale is Kennedy Davenport, which unfortunately means it’s the end of the competition for Canada’s own Miss Fiercalicious and that Lemon is the only Canadian queen left with a chance at the crown.

Next week on Canada vs. The World: The final four compete in the ultimate lip sync smackdown… FOR THE CROWN!
