RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 9 Episode 11 Recap: Grand Finale Variety Extravaganza: Part 1

The All Star queens get ready to compete one last time, have a one on one with mother Ru, and an old All Stars twist appears ahead of the last episode…

Last week the queens competed in a Lala PaRuza Lip Sync Smackdown to earn extra badges that’ll get them one step closer to competing in next week’s grand finale. Roxxxy and Shannel rose above the rest after the battle royale and had a lip sync of their own. It was Roxxxy who took it all and became one of the most decorated lip sync assassins in the show’s herstory. This week is only part one of this season’s grand finale. The queens have one more challenge to prepare for  before we find out which of them will be competing for the crown and charitable donation. Let’s get into it.

Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 9 Episode 11 Recap: Grand Finale Variety Extravaganza: Part 1

This week’s episode begins in the werk room the day after Roxxxy’s big win. The queens have grown so close but it’s still a competition. Waiting for them on the table is the pink fuzzy box. The queens must reach in and grab a card and complete the task to win money for charity. They play the game and follow the cues to win some extra money to donate. Ru enters the werk room to tell the queens that for their final mini challenge they’ll need to transform a show crew member into a Ru girl with the magic of quick drag. After a random drawing the queens are all paired up with a crew member and they’ll have 30 minutes to get them looking like seasoned drag queens. Once time is up the queens present their new drag daughters to Ru and the rest of the queens. After an impressive mini runway Ru declares that everyone is a winner for this mini challenge.

Ru tells the queens they have a grand finale to get to, so the crew members unfortunately have to get back to work and it’s time for Ru to announce that for their final maxi challenge the queens will have to put their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent on display in a variety show extravaganza and the top two queens will each win three benefactress badges, so it’s still anybody’s game. In between their variety show performance rehearsals, the queens will have a TicTac chat with Ru, who also painfully teases the queens with a tidbit of information he just can’t seem to remember. The queens start prepping for their performances and ask each other what they’re planning on presenting, how scared they are for Ru’s forgotten twist, and how many badges they’ll all need to make it to the finale. Shannel is up first with her one-on-one chat with Ru and she talks about how letting everything go allowed her to start winning challenges. Angeria uses her solo chat to talk about her aspiration to be an actress and how much Ru stands behind it. Meanwhile, Gottmik rehearses her performance with some of the dancers. Nina sits down with Ru and shares what her experience has been coming back and why The Trevor Project is so important for her. Vanjie is up next and she hilariously talks to Ru about “wanting it enough” and how her confidence has grown since her first season. Jorgeous uses her time to talk about what she’s learned about herself this time around. Back in the werk room, Shannel is polishing literal swords for her performance and Plastique reveals she’s planning on twirling sabers, like lightsabers? for her variety show talent.

Gottmik sits down with Ru and tells him she wants to sing and act and try everything while she has the chance and how transphobia fires her up to perform at her best. Some of the other queens get busy choreographing their performances with the dancers. Roxxxy talks to Ru about her third time being in the werk room and how she’s changed as a competitor since her first season. She got emotional talking about her personal life and how her community stood by her throughout it. Plastique tells Ru how much being back means to her and gets a little teary eyed talking about her journey getting to where she is, breaking down when Ru tells her how proud he is of her. Back in the werk room the queens are putting the finishing touches on their costumes and Vanjie and Gottmik share a sweet moment. In confessionals Mik tells the camera she thinks she has a crush on Vanjie and serenades her in the werk room. Vanjie shares similar thoughts in confessional and Mik’s encore ballad is interrupted by some RuMail.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 9 Episode 11 Recap: Grand Finale Variety Extravaganza: Part 1

Ts Madison appears on the screen to tell the queens that she has a double diamond to give away. Whoever receives this prize will double the number of badges they have ahead of the finale. It could give a queen the boost she needs to get into the top three. Ts isn’t choosing who gets it, and neither is Ru. The queens will have to vote for the queen they think best deserves the double diamond. The queen with the most votes wins, but the winner won’t be announced until all of the badges have been awarded at the end of the variety show.

One by one the queens walk into the werk room and are met with an old friend of the show. LIPSTICK VOTING IS BACK! For a limited time only. As they vote they walk through their decision making process. Some vote strategically, some vote from the heart, but either way it’s not an easy decision. Of the votes that were revealed, Gottmik and Roxxxy voted for Nina, Jorgeous selected Plastique, and Plastique and Nina voted for Roxxxy. Anybody could still win, and that final three will be a total surprise to everybody.

Next week on All Stars: It’s the final lap and the queens leave it all on the runway before final badges are distributed and a winner is crowned.
