RuPaul's Drag Race Season 16 Episode 9 RECAP- See You Next Wednesday

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 16 Episode 9 RECAP: See You Next Wednesday

The top eight queens create neo-goth lewks from scratch during a sewing challenge and model Kaia Gerber is a guest judge…

Last week some of the queens rose to the occasion to deliver us instantly iconic Snatch Game performances. Plane Jane took home the maxi challenge win after her impression of Serbian pop star Jelena Karleuša had all of the judges in stitches. Nymphia’s Jane Goodall didn’t hit the right notes which landed her in the bottom, but her jaw-dropping runway saved her from having to lip sync for her life. After a passionate lip sync to I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Xunami was asked to sashay away, with Ru giving Morphine a second shot at the crown. This week the remaining queens get back to their hot glue guns and sewing machines to make neo-goth lewks from scratch for a very special runway presentation. Let’s get into it!

This week’s episode begins in the werk room following Xunami’s elimination. The remaining queens head over to the mirror to read her goodbye message. Morphine has an emotional moment reading Xunami’s words and in confessionals Plane admits this elimination has been really hard on her too. Over on the couches they congratulate Plane on her second win. Plane says her win feels like it’s been overshadowed by the shock elimination. In confessionals Mhi’ya says Sapphira should have won the Snatch Game and some of the other queens agree. Some of the queens tell Nymphia that they were gooped she wasn’t in the bottom, but the competition just got tougher and eliminations will be much harder from here on out.

It’s a new day in the werk room and the queens are feeling ready to take on a new challenge. Nymphia is feeling like she has something to prove after her performance last week. Ru’s video message interrupts with a gothic-themed message and enters the room to give the queens all the T. Ru tells the queens that for this week’s mini challenge the queens will give their best spit-take. They get into quick comedy queen drag and head over to the makeshift comedy club stage to do their best spit-takes. Ru announces that the winner of the mini challenge is Nymphia, a little bit of redemption after her Snatch Game misstep last week. Ru announces that for this week’s mini challenge the queens will need to create neo-goth lewks from scratch. They’ll only get to use the black, grey, and white fabric for this challenge. The sewing girls are excited but some of the other girls are understandably nervous.

They race to pick their fabrics and get to planning their outfits right away. Q and Nymphia are excited about another design challenge. Plane asks Plasma if she’s going to be able to adapt her aesthetic to fit the brief of the challenge. Mhi’ya didn’t do well on the doll design challenge, so she’s feeling really nervous about making sure she doesn’t land in the bottom this week. Sapphira is leaning towards a design she knows she can handle which Q thinks is playing it too safe. Dawn is keeping her design under wraps from her biggest competition but she shows Plane and Plane tells her it’s really ambitious. As per usual Nymphia is looking like a lost puppy around the werk room but none of the other queens are buying it this time. Plane has a set plan, but if all else fails she still has an immunity potion. Dawn asks Plasma if she’s planning on doing anything different and kind of helps her work towards a different direction. Plane catches wind that Plasma’s new design is similar to hers and confronts her right away but Plasma isn’t backing down. Morphine is working hard because she was in the bottom last time and she doesn’t want to find herself there again this week and as Plane begins the detail work she quickly realizes this is going to take a long time. After a quick pep talk from Sapphira, Plasma gets some more confidence to finish the construction of her look. Sapphira is once again helping Mhi’ya with making her full look which all of the queens aren’t too happy with.

It’s elimination day and it’s time for the queens to get ready for the runway and get the finishing touches done on their lewks. Mhi’ya is feeling really confident about her runway which is rubbing some of the other queens the wrong way since she didn’t really make anything herself. While they get painted for the runway they talk about their dating histories as teenagers in their hometown and how those experiences have carried over into adulthood. Out on the runway, Ru introduces this weeks panel of judges, Michelle, Carson, and this week’s extra-special guest judge model Kaia Gerber. The category is “See You Next Wednesday” and one-by-one the queens make their way down the runway in their gothic garments. After the runway, Ru asks Plane Jane if she wants to use her potion this week. Plane decides to hold off on using it for one more week. This week’s episode everybody’s getting critiqued.

They start with Plane Jane and the judges like her look and expected more from her but her hair and makeup sold it for them. Mhi’ya’s look gets generally good critiques but Michelle can tell she didn’t make her own dress and questions how she got it to look so good. Michelle tells Dawn she did a brilliant job with her design and all of the judges loved how much work went into her look. Dawn reveals she has an engineering degree which makes a lot of sense. Michelle tells Morphine her makeup is beautiful and says she did a good job with the dress but she wasn’t blown away by it. Michelle tells Plasma her look is a let down and is really confused by it. Ru tells her it doesn’t read as goth at all. All of the judges love Sapphira’s look and loved how she sold it. Michelle loved the production behind Nymphia’s look and Kaia tells her it looks like it could hit a couture runway right away. Finally, Carson gushes over Q’s corseted jacket. All of the judges agree that it was one of the best looks of the night based off of construction alone.

After deliberations Ru announces that Q is the winner of this week’s challenge. Plane, Dawn, Sapphira, and Nymphia are all safe for the week. This leaves Mhi’ya, Morphine, and Plasma are in the bottom three this week. Morphine is safe, leaving Mhi’ya and Plasma up for elimination.

The bottom two lip sync for their life to a TikTok remix of Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga and no tricks are spared. There’s a wig reveal, flips, tricks, and lots of emotion. After a passionate lip sync, Ru decides that Mhi’ya will get to stay once again. Unfortunately that means it’s the end of the line for Plasma, even with her impressive track record.

Next week on Drag Race: The queens write a verse for a RuPaul song and tension rises between Morphine and Mhi’ya.
