The Rekai Centres’ 2SLGBTQI+ Rainbow Wing Seeks Proposals For Visual Transformation

The first dedicated long-term care to support Rainbow Seniors looking for artists or designers to transform the space…

The Rekai Centres, a non-profit, charitable long-term care home in Toronto made history in 2022 with the first Rainbow Wing in a long-term care home in North America. Now, they are seeking proposals for the visual transformation of this welcoming and ground-breaking space.

The Rainbow Wing

For many 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, there is a very real fear that their sexual orientation and/or gender identity will not be respected or acknowledged when they enter long-term care. Many fear that they will feel pressure to go back into the closet due to how they may be treated by other residents or staff. The Rekai Centres is committed to making sure that doesn’t happen in their facilities. Through education and curated programming like Pride or drag events, they ensure everyone feels at home.

“We want our history preserved with dignity… our movements in advocacy, our marches, our achievements, our leaders and icons…our legacy for future generations must be remembered,” explained JP, a Rainbow Wing resident at Rekai Centres at Wellesley Central Place.

An Exciting New Project

The objective of this visual transformation is to design and create an empowering and stunning representation of 2SLGBTQI+ communities, the residents, chosen families, and staff. It should develop a visually inclusive concept incorporating the 2SLGBTQI+ community’s spirit, history, and achievements. The artwork should also enhance the overall aesthetics of the Rainbow Wing and create an atmosphere that fosters inclusivity, acceptance, and a sense of belonging for all residents. Artists are welcome to utilize artistic elements, such as murals, paintings, sculptures, or any other creative mediums, to convey the essence of 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

Putting Together a Proposal

Anyone interested in participating in this project should submit a comprehensive proposal that includes the following information:

  • Artist’s or designer’s background and experience working on similar projects.
  • Conceptual vision and artistic approach for the visual decoration of the Rainbow Wing.
  • A detailed description of proposed artwork, materials, and techniques.
  • Estimated project timeline, including key milestones and deliverables.
  • Budget breakdown, encompassing all costs associated with creating and installing the artwork.
  • Portfolio showcasing previous relevant work and references, if applicable.
  • Any additional information or considerations that may enhance the proposal.

Proposal Submission and Deadline

Proposals should be submitted electronically to the following email address: barbaram@rekaicentres.com Please ensure the email’s subject line reads: “Proposal for Visual Transformation of Rainbow Wing at Rekai Centres.” The deadline for proposal submission is March 1st, 2024, 11:59pm EST.

The selection committee will evaluate all proposals based on their artistic merit, alignment with the project objectives, feasibility, and budget. Shortlisted applicants may be invited for an interview or presentation to discuss their proposals further. The final selection will be based on the committee’s assessment of the proposals and the artists’ suitability for the project.

The selected artist or designer will be awarded a contract with Rekai Centres for the visual transformation of the Rainbow Wing. The compensation and expenses will be negotiated based on the proposal, project requirements, and the artist’s expertise. Rekai Centres will retain ownership of the artwork and any associated intellectual property rights. However, the selected artist will be duly credited for their work.
