Nike's New BeTrue Collections Pays Tribute To Pride Flag Designer Gilbert Baker

Nike celebrates the LGBTQ community with the 2019 BeTrue collection…

Nike is back with another celebratory BeTrue footwear and apparel collection. This year’s collection pays homage to Gilbert Baker, a political activist and designer who created the original Pride Flag.

The first rainbow flag was a hand-sewn piece created by Baker for his friend Harvey Milk to use at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade in 1978. Months later Milk would be tragically assassinated and that the rainbow flag would go on to become a globally recognized symbol of pride, community, and the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights.

This summer Nike teamed up with the Gilbert Baker Estate (Gilbert passed away in 2017) to collaborate on the 2019 BeTrue collection. Every piece in the collection features the eight original colours of the original flagas part of a reworked Nike logo, Baker’s signature and lots of glitter, which Baker was always covered in.

Apparel and accessory options include a variety of logo tees, tanks, jackets, socks, and a unisex shoulder bag.

The footwear collection includes five pairs of sneakers: the Air Max 720, Air Tailwind 79, Zoom Pegasus Turbo, Benassi JDI, and Air Max 90.

The entire Nike BeTrue 2019 collection in celebration of Pride month will be availableat select retailers globally on June 1 and on June 8 in North America on nike.com and at select Nike stores. As with previous collections, Nike will donate a portion of BeTrue sales to organizations empowering sports in the LGBT community.
