Angela Ponce, a transgender woman, was crowned Miss Universe Spain 2018 over the weekend. The 27-year-old model will now represent Spain at the 67th annual Miss Universe pageant at the end of this year.
On Instagram, Ponce said, “My biggest dream is to present the name and the colors of Spain before the universe. My goal is to be a spokesperson of a message of inclusion, respect, and diversity, not only for the LGBTQ+ community but also for the whole world.”
Ponce is the first transgender woman to win the Miss Universe Spain pageant since rules were changed to allow transgender women in 2012. That same year Jenna Talackova from Canada became the first trans woman to compete in the pageant.
She previously represented Cadiz in the Miss World Spain pageant in 2015, losing to the contestant who would go on to win the Miss World pageant.
