The House Of Cards star comes out as gay in a statement responding to sexual-misconduct allegations made by actor Anthony Rapp…
Hours after BuzzFeed News published a report in which Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp accused Kevin Spacey of attempting to seduce him when Rapp was 14, Spacey has released a statement claiming not to recall the incident in question and addressing his sexual orientation for the first time. He also offers an apology to Rapp. “I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago,” Spacey says. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
Spacey goes on to confirm the long-standing rumour that he is, in fact, gay. “I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fuelled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy… This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life,” the House of Cards star says in part. “I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.” You can read his full statement, which the actor tweeted late Sunday night, below. Concludes Spacey, “I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behaviour.”
Rapp, now 46, alleges that in 1986, Spacey invited the then-teenaged actor to a party at his New York apartment and, at the end of the evening, physically carried Rapp to bed and attempted to initiate sex. (They were both starring in hit Broadway plays at the time.) Spacey would have been 26 at the time; Rapp was 14. “My stomach churns,” Rapp says of the experience now. “I still to this day can’t wrap my head around so many aspects of it. It’s just deeply confusing to me.”
