Britney Spears is set to attend the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards in April where she will receive the LGBTQ media advocacy organization’s Vanguard Award. The award is presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBT+ people.
Previous honourees for the Vanguard Award include Jennier Lopez, Cher, Elizabeth Taylor, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Demi Lovato, Eric McCormack, Josh Hutchinson, among others.
“An irrefutable icon, Britney Spears has entertained the world while also embodying the spirit of GLAAD’s Vanguard Award by speaking out on significant issues that face her fans – from the Dream Act to anti-transgender bills in Texas,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “She is a force in the music world who has used her global platform to share messages of love and acceptance, something that the world needs today more than ever.”
Spears is a longtime ally of the LGBTQ community. She was one of 20 artists to appear on GLAAD’s single ‘Hands’ to remember the 49 lives taken in the Orlando massacre, and last year she was one of the 140 entertainers to speak out in an open letter against two anti-LGBT+ bills which targeted trans youth in Texas. The singer also wrote a heartwarming letter to the LGBT+ community for Billboard during Pride Month in 2017, thanking her LGBT+ fans for their “unwavering loyalty” during her career.
Spears will receive her Vanguard Award at the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles at Beverly Hilton on April 12. More awards will be given out at a ceremony in New York City on May 5.
