The good news: Call Me By Your Name scored three Golden Globe nominations…
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards on Monday morning during a live broadcast from Beverly Hills featuring Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell, and Sharon Stone.
Although there wasn’t a ton of gay love in this year’s nominations, a few LGBT-themed films and TV shows are in the running to pick up awards… most notably, Luca Guadagnino’s sumptuous, Call Me By Your Name.
Call Me By Your Name
Guadagnino’s excellent LGBT coming-of-age film, Call Me By Your Name picked up three Golden Globe nominations in total: a nomination for Best Picture as well as a Best actor nomination for Timothee Chalamet and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Armie Hammer. Surprisingly, Guadagnino was not nominated in the Best Director category, although that likely won’t dampen hopes for the movie’s chances in the more prestigious Academy Awards.
Will & Grace
NBC’s Will & Grace was nominated for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy. The revived LGBT fave will compete alongside Black-ish, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisal, Master of None, and Smilf for the award next month. Actor Eric McCormack (and star of our September/October 2017 issue) was also nominated for his role as Will Truman.
Battle Of The Sexes
Emma Stone was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical for her role as tennis legend and lesbian icon in Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.
Feud: Bette and Joan
Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon both received nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series for their roles as gay icons Joan Crawford and Bette Davis in Ryan Murphy’s ultra-camp Feud: Bette and Joan.
Ferdinand
Justin Tranter, the queer musician and songwriter, was nominated for his song “Home,” which was sung by Nick Jonas and featured in the animated movie Ferdinand.
BPM
The biggest surprise for gay film fans was Robin Campillo’s BPM (Beats Per Minute) missing out on a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. (You can read our review from our June 2017 issue here) Here’s hoping the excellent film about an AIDS activist group in 1990s Paris gets a little love come Oscar time.
The Golden Globes will take place on January 7, 2018 at the Beverly Hilton with host Seth Meyers leading the way.
