This week on The Bald and the Beautiful, Katya revealed that she passed on an opportunity to return to the Drag Race universe.
The comments came as her and co-host Trixie Mattel were congratulating Ginger Minj on winning All Stars 10. Mattel asked how many seasons of Drag Race Minj had been on, leading the queens to list them. They then made up a bunch of franchises poking fun at the Drag Race spin-off pipeline. Before moving on, Katya stopped the conversation for a quick tangent.
“Very quickly, I will never forget the day I got the call to do Canada vs. the World,” she told Mattel. The queen explained she thought it was a prank. Mattel added that it sounded strange and the pair moved on.
Katya didn’t elaborate why she turned down the chance to walk in front of Brooke Lynn Hytes, Traci Melchor and Brad Goreski. It’s also unknown which season she was asked to participate in.
Katya’s appearance on Canada’s Drag Race: Canada’s vs. the World would have changed the dynamic greatly. Would she have been a powerhouse and won? Or would the queens have perceived her as a major threat, eliminating her the moment she landed in the bottom? Sadly, we will never know.
What other queens have rejected Canada vs. the World?
Katya isn’t the first queen to share that they rejected an offer for Canada’s Drag Race: Canada’s vs. the World.
In an episode of Maddy Morphosis’ Give It To Me Straight podcast, Drag Race Holland winner Envy Peru said she got the call for season one. She told Morphosis that World of Wonder already passed on the opportunity, but out of courtesy checked in with her.
“I said, ‘Well, if I’m going to go back on Drag Race or whatever season, I want to do it in front of RuPaul,’ and that’s nothing against Brooke Lynn Hytes. I love Brooke Lynn Heights but I’ve never been in front of RuPaul,” Peru shared. “I want to present my drag in front of Mother Ru.”
She went on to suspect the reason they wanted her was because Icesis Couture was also competing. “They wanted to have two winners against each other.”
Season one almost saw Trinity K. Bonet (RuPaul’s Drag Race season six and All Stars 6) compete. The queen had arrived in Canada to film, but pulled out at the very last minute.
On Alaska Thunderfuck and Willam’s podcast Race Chaser, guest Priyanka shared how Bonet was ready for the season, but quit.
“I realized that she…showed up and was like: ‘I don’t want to do this’, and I was like, ‘I love this tea,’” Priyanka shared on the podcast.
Willam went on to call Bonet a confident and iconic person for turning the show down, despite having a full runway package ready.
Bonet later revealed on Instagram that she dropped out due to medical issues.
