Launched last week, Q-TILITIES promises competitive energy rates, while prioritizing impact over profit…
For Alberta’s Chris Cann, he’s hoping to serve kilowatts and charisma across his province. Last week, the entrepreneur launched Canada’s first ever queer owned utility company called Q-TILITIES. The energy service provider offers Albertans competitive rates for electricity, natural gas and internet.
Beyond delivering fair rates and a reliable service, Q-TILITIES wants to turn everyday energy decisions into meaningful acts of change. The company prioritizes impact over profit, promising to reinvest any surplus revenue to 2SLGBTQI+ organizations, charities and non-profits in Alberta. “When you pay your power bill, you deserve to know it’s fuelling more than lights,” an Instagram post from launch day states. “It’s fuelling visibility, inclusion, and Pride, 365 days a year.”
Cann wants every customer to be part of a bigger story that results in a lasting impact for queer communities. “This is about a future where community supports community,” he said in a press release. The business model comes at a crucial time as queer organizations have faced a decline in funding this year as major corporations roll back DEI initiatives.
Q-TILITIES is part of the Community Energy Marketer program run by energy management and technology solution company UTILITYnet. “Q-TILITIES is a shining example of how businesses can be a force for good,” its managing director Darren Chu said in a statement.
