St. Margaret’s Bay Pride Is Bringing The Rainbow To Rural Nova Scotia

The first annual Pride event is looking to increase visibility and connect rural 2SLGBTIA+ Nova Scotians…

Hold on to your lobster rolls, a group of rural Nova Scotia communities are coming together to celebrate the first annual St. Margaret’s Bay Pride! Taking place now until July 26, the festival is set to connect 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in the St. Margaret’s Bay area such as Peggy’s Cove, Hubbards, Fox Point and more.

The Pride organization was started by former Torontonians Tania Cheng and Dana Decent. The couple moved to the area almost five years ago, building a small network of queer friends. The pair began to notice a lack of queer visibility in the area, difficulties finding other queer individuals and realized how that could potentially isolate 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in rural communities. Wanting to change this, the couple and their friends came together to create a 15-person organizing committee to bring St. Margaret’s Bay Pride to life.

“Hello! We are St. Margaret’s Bay Pride, a new volunteer-run and community-based organization working to increase 2SLGBTQIA+ visibility and solidarity in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia,” the organization said in its first Instagram post in April 2025.

With festivities in full effect, St. Margaret’s Bay Pride is offering 14+ events for people of all interests and ages including sports and art activities, drag storytime, bingo and more. On June 14, it will host a drag night at Black Harbour Distilleries hosted by drag couple The Trinity Foxx and Brooke Rivers. “More events will be announced as they’re confirmed, so keep your eyes on this space for event updates and details,” the organization teased on Instagram.

Beyond throwing this two month Pride festival, the group is working to make sure 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals are seen year round and know who their allies are. The group is currently giving away “You Are Welcome Here” stickers featuring the Pride flag for businesses and services to display on their doors or windows.

“These stickers are a small but powerful way to show that 2SLGBTQIA+ people are safe, seen, and celebrated in your space,” the organization said on Instagram. “Especially as our communities face rising hate.”
