'Uncoupled' Season 2 Has Been Cancelled Again

‘Uncoupled’ Season 2 Has Been Cancelled Again

It looks like Neil Patrick Harris’ Uncoupled will not return to Showtime for season 2…

Uncoupled has had a pretty wild ride since its first season aired back in 2022 on Netflix. The romantic dramedy was initially cancelled by Netflix after the first season started streaming and then saved from cancellation by Showtime a few months later. However, more than a year since that announcement it turns out Showtime won’t be coming to Uncoupled‘s rescue after all. The cabler has opted not to move forward with a second season of Neil Patrick Harris‘ gay divorce comedy.

Uncoupled followed New York City real estate agent Michael Lawson (Neil Patrick Harris), whose partner of 17 years, Colin McKenna (Tuc Watkins), unexpectedly breaks up with him. As a 40-something gay man, Michael finds it hard to digest his sudden single status and struggles to navigate the unfamiliar world of dating. Instead of finding absolute answers to his dating dilemmas, Michael only further complicates his life with the string of romantic affairs and potential relationships that arrive. Uncoupled‘s eight-episode first (and now only) season ended with Colin returning to their apartment and telling Michael that he made a huge “mistake.”

Other finale twists (that will now remain open-ended) included Michael’s coworker Suzanne (Tisha Campbell) coming face to face with her son’s father for the first time since college; Michael’s best friend Stanley (Brooks Ashmanskas) revealing that he has breast cancer; and Billy (Emerson Brooks), the group’s resident “fun one,” deciding that it’s time to get serious about love and life.

Showtime initially scooped up Uncoupled for a second season in February 2023, but the Hollywood strikes of that year put most production on hold, including Uncoupled. When the strikes were resolved, Showtime’s creative team was to put the project into redevelopment to tailor it to the network’s sensibilities. According to DeadlineUncoupled had been gearing up to start shooting season 2 in May 2024 with the 10 scripts largely written. But, that’s not happening now.

Unfortunately for Uncoupled, and fans of the show, it’s highly unlikely another streamer or network will pick the show up again.
