RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 Episode 16 Recap: Grand Finale

The top four lip sync for the crown and a new queen supreme is named in the season 15 finale…

Sixteen weeks of challenges mini and maxi, legendary lip syncs, and one single double save have led us to this moment. Grand finales are always opulent, so we’re in for a show, but by the end of the night there will be a new drag superstar crowned. Mistress, Luxx, Sasha, and Anetra are ready to fight for the win. Before we get to that we have a whole lot of performances to watch, special surprises, and a Miss Congeniality to be crowned. Let’s get into it!

The finale begins with all of the season 15 queens entering in the order they were eliminated. It’s no surprise everyone has come in absolutely stunning lewks including our top four of course. Ru makes a grand entrance performing an original song before giving a special shout out to fellow judges Michelle, Carson, Ross, and TS in the audience.  Ru announces that each of the top queens will perform original songs about their personal journeys and the two Ru likes the most will go head to head to lip sync for the last time this season (for the crown).

First up to perform their original song is Anetra. She’s been working on her original song Lotus which has special meaning to her because lotus flowers have to grow through mud to blossom. She takes the stage and her song is uplifting, empowering, and her choreography is also super impressive and fun to watch (but who’s surprised?). The judges give her really nice critiques and she tells Ru how much her life has changed since being on the show. Ru asks Anetra’s dad what his fave wig of her’s is to wear and he gives some advice on raising drag artists.

Luxx is up next to perform her original song called It’s Giving Fashion. It’s catchy, it’s fun, it’s got an outfit reveal, and it’s totally Luxx. Following her performance Michelle tells her she has made New Jersey very proud. Ru asks her if there’s a Drag Race quote to describe what she’s feeling before asking how she’s really feeling (which is on top of the world). Luxx’s mom and boyfriend are there to support her. Luxx says she loves drag because it allows her to express every wild thought or idea she has in a creative way.

After a quick tribute to iconic designer Bob Mackie as he is the first recipient of the “Giving Us Lifetime Achievement Award” and a short but sweet acceptance speech, it’s time for Mistress to perform her original song Delusion. The lyrics are definitely a nod to one of her most used quotes of the season and she gives it her all with an outfit reveal and a bit of choreography. The judges tell her she is for SURE in her finale era. Mistress gives some heartfelt advice to the big girls and reveals her drag mother and best friend are there supporting her. Mistress tells Ru that drag families are important because for many queens their drag family IS their family.

Finally, Sasha takes the stage to perform her original song Goddess. The performance is Beyoncé concert-worthy, but we didn’t expect anything less from Miss Sasha Colby TBH. The judges sing her praises and she tells Ru that the best part of this journey has been meeting the fans that are not just accepting but celebrate queerness and drag. Sasha has friends and family in the audience supporting her who give her a tearful tribute. Sasha has a manifesting moment on stage and says she wants to pursue music, acting, and maybe also a TV show.

Following the performances Ru brings all four top queens to the stage. Only two will be moving forward to the final lip sync for the crown and after some deliberations Anetra and Sasha will be moving forward to the final lip sync. This means it’s officially the end of the line for Mistress and Luxx, who I’m sure we’ll see a lot of in the future. While the final two get ready for the last lip syncs Ru throws it to a video package filled with drag fans talking about why drag is important to them in a time where Drag is currently trying to be outlawed in several states. Musician and former guest judge Orville Peck performs a song from Wigloose: The Rusical with the producer of the musical and the queens of season 15.

America’s reigning drag superstar Willow Pill makes a grand entrance with the rest of the queens on stage to pass on the crown. Kornbread joins her to announce the winner of this season’s Miss Congeniality. After a fun little song it is announced that the queens have voted for Malaysia Babydoll Fox to win Miss Congeniality this year.

We’re treated to a video package of international drag all star Jinkx Monsoon AND a surprise performance from her legendary run in Chicago on Broadway. Ru shows a little clip from their Tic Tac interview back in 2013 where Jinkx said it has always been her dream to do drag on Broadway AND SHE DID THE THING!

But it’s the moment we’ve been waiting for all season… Sasha and Anetra take the stage once again to lip sync for their lives. The top two queens lip sync to Knock on Wood by Amii Stewart. Sasha starts strong right from the beginning with an outfit reveal, but Anetra has a few tricks up her bedazzled sleeve too. Sasha does another sickening outfit reveal that leaves her almost naked on stage but both of these queens are giving it their all. Ru announces that the winner of season 15 and 200,000 dollars is… SASHA COLBY! Condragulations Sasha! It is so well deserved.
