RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 Episode 6 Recap: Old Friends Gold

The queens split up and perform as golden girl groups and comedian Megan Stalter is a guest judge…

Last week we watched as the queens constructed couture lewks from home goods and said goodbye to Amethyst after she found herself in the bottom two for the third week in a row. Luxx Noir London was named the winner of the week after presenting a gorgeous garment on the runway. This week the queens will put on a Shady Pines worthy performance because… it’s GIRL GROUP WEEK! Let’s get into it.

This week’s episode begins in the werk room after Amethyst’s elimination. The remaining queens enter and read her lipstick message. Salina says being in the bottom has woken her up and the competition is heating up. Over on the couches the queens congratulate Luxx on her win. Some of the other queens are convinced Malaysia is still living in delusion after her critiques on her outfit.

It’s a new day in the werk room and the queens gather around the table. Malaysia says she heard one of the other queens (Mistress) say she should’ve been in the bottom, which Mistress confirms. Ru enters the room and tells the queens that for this week’s maxi challenge they  will be breaking into three groups of four to create “golden girl groups” aka girl groups where they will age themselves up with makeup and saggy breast-plates to perform. This week’s special pit crew are internet sensations The Old Gays who step into the werk room and give the queens some inspiration for their performances.

The three groups listen to all of the songs and to nobody’s surprise there is a fight over the genre choices and nobody wants the country song. To make it as fair as possible the queens pick it out of a hat. They then spilt into their groups to write their verses. Out on the main stage the queens record their songs and Team Hip Hop is up first. Anetra, Jax, and Loosey lay down their tracks with ease but Robin is having a bit of trouble. Team Country is next and Marcia, Luxx, and Mistress all knock it out of the park with their lyrics and even Salina (who was worried about her lyrics as she was writing) makes it work. Team Metal is last and Sasha, Spice, and Malaysia record without problem but Aura has a bit of trouble giving it her best. After recording the queens all work together to choreograph their performances.

It’s elimination day and the queens enter the werk room to get ready for their golden girl group performances. Sasha talks about the history of the danger trans and drag performers faced in the ‘50s and ‘60s in Hawaii and everyone agrees on how lucky they are to be doing drag on a stage this big. Out on the main stage Ru introduces this week’s panel of judges Michelle, Ross and this week’s extra special guest, comedian Megan Stalter.

Shady Pines-a-Palooza begins with Team Country and their performance is a hit. Team Rock is up next and their performance was electric and got a lot of laughs from Ru. Last is Team Hip Hop and they definitely have the most intense choreography, but Ru’s reaction is kind of hard to read.

Following the performances the queens prance down the runway in their fiercest tie-dye looks. Ru calls Loosey, Luxx, Salina, Marcia, Spice, and Malaysia forward as they are all safe.

Critiques begin with Anetra. Ross liked her runway but Michelle clocked her for forgetting her lyrics. Megan liked Jax’s lyrics, but Michelle says there were timing issues with the performance. Michelle tells Robin she’s being too safe with her performance and all of the other judges agree. Megan tells Mistress she’s a star and Ross said she outshone her teammates, and Ru asks her to give Marcia makeup tips. All of the judges loved Sasha’s performance and runway and the risk she took. Ru and Michelle tell Aura her performance was amazing this week and they’re so happy she finally showed up to impress. After deliberations Ru announces Aura is the winner of this week’s challenge. Sasha, Mistress, and Anetra are all safe. This means Jax and Robin are both in the bottom and up for elimination.

The two bottom queens lip sync for their life to “In Your Room” by the Bangles. Jax throws in a backflip and Robin does a cartwheel or two, but in the end Ru decides that Jax will stay to slay another day sending Robin to sashay away from the competition.

Next week on Drag Race: The queens act in the reboot of Daytona Winds and things boil over with Mistress and Malaysia.
