Celebrating Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ Communities

Egale Shows Us Why It’s Actually One Of The Queerest Times Of The Year

And, reminds us that we can help give more 2SLGBTQI people the greatest holiday gift of all: the gift of belonging…

Let’s face it…the holidays have always been a little queer. The sparkle, glitter, and non-stop Mariah Carey! Yet so many members of the 2SLGBTQI community spend this season feeling isolated and alone. So, to promote their holiday fundraising efforts, advocacy organization Egale has launched a new video showing how the holidays have #AlwaysBeenQueer.

Set to a disco cover of “Deck the Halls,” Egale’s short video showcases various festive and campy holiday vignettes—from rainbow-coloured ornaments, to a nutcracker by the fireplace, to a fabulous holiday sweater, and more. Before revealing how for many 2SLGBTQI people, the holidays can also be one of the toughest times of the year. In fact, over 60% of 2SLGBTQI respondents in Egale Canada’s 2021 report felt unsafe to authentically be themselves.

Through the generosity of holiday donations generated by the #AlwaysBeenQueer video, Egale Canada will be able to continue providing support for the 2SLGBTQI community through research, education, awareness, and legal advocacy in the year ahead.

You can watch Egale’s Give the Gift of Belonging video below, and become a donor at egale.ca/belonging.
