The third and final episode of Off-Mute, Fido’s artist-to-artist interview and performance series, is out now and features Jeremy Dutcher and Haviah Mighty.
Individually either would be fascinating to hear speak their minds, and together it creates something else; something beautiful and unexpected. Painful cultural histories are revealed through their songs. Mighty raps about the Atlantic slave trade, Dutcher sings in Wolastoqey, a language with now fewer than 100 speakers. Yet, there is no despair in their conversation, only hope. It’s quite simply inspiring.
Dutcher and Mighty met for the first time two years ago. In 2018, Dutcher won the Polaris Prize for his album,Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, and the following year, he took the stage to award the 2019 Polaris Prize to Mighty for her album, 13th Floor. Dutcher is quick to point out that the pair work in very different genres, and their performances show that. He, a tenor, seated at a grand piano, and she, a rapper, energetically moving around the stage. However, Dutcher also says that that he and Mighty are similar in how they use their voices to share a unique perspective, and their interview shows that.
The performances are spectacular, the outfits are dazzling, the personalities are sincere and endearing, and just like the other episodes of Off-Mute, this one is distinctly different from the rest. Watch this episode below orcatch them all on IGTV, @FidoMobile.
