One Million Moms Boycotts American Girl Over Doll With Lesbian Aunts

The anti-LGBTQ organization is pretty wound up over a doll with lesbian aunts…

One Million Moms has a new target and it’s an adorable American Girl doll named Kira. The socially conservative advocacy group created by the American Family Association is calling for a boycott of the toy company over Kira, who happens to be the 2021 Girl of the Year doll.

One Million Moms launched the petition shortly after The American Girl company announced that Kira Bailey was their 2021 Girl of the Year doll. In her accompanying book, Kira Down Under, the 10-year-old Kira visits her great aunts at their animal sanctuary in Australia. The book explains the aunts are married because of changes in the law for same-sex marriage.

A statement from One Million Moms called the storyline “unacceptable.”

“As Christians, we know that even though something is legalized doesn’t make it moral or right,” One Million Moms said. “American Girl could have chosen another storyline or characters to write about and remained neutral in the culture war. American Girl is attempting to desensitize our youth by featuring a storyline with two lesbian aunts.”

But American Girl is standing by Kira and her great aunts.

“From the beginning, our ‘Girl of the Year’ characters have been designed to reflect girls’ lives today and the realities of the times,” Julie Parks, an American Girl spokesperson said in a statement. “As a brand, we’ve always strived to share the message that there’s no ‘magic recipe’ for a family and that families can be made up of all kinds of ingredients – and each is unique and lovely. We know for girls who can directly relate to Kira’s circumstances (i.e. a father who has passed away or a couple in a same-sex marriage), we’re glad to show them that the make-up of one’s family doesn’t matter – it’s still a family and that’s all the counts. It’s a sentiment we love at American Girl.”
