Tyler Perry's New Studio Will Include A Shelter For Homeless LGBTQ Youth

Speaking to CBS This Morning, Perry said he now plans to include a new compound to house people with nowhere else to go…

Tyler Perry has announced the opening of a 12-sound stage, 330-acre film studio complex in Atlanta, Georgia, becoming the first black American man to own a studio outright. In addition to the usual studio facilities, the complex will also feature a shelter for victims of sex trafficking and displaced LGBTQ youth.

During an interview with Gayle King on CBS This Morning, the actor, writer, producer and director talked about creating a space for those who have been left homeless after being displaced or rejected by their families.

“I’ll tell you what I’m most excited about next is pulling this next phase off, is building a compound for trafficked women, girls, homeless women, LGBTQ youth who are put out and displaced,” Perry told King. “Somewhere on these 330 acres, where they’re trained in the business and they become self-sufficient.”

“They live in nice apartments. There’s daycare. There’s all of these wonderful things that allows them to reenter society. And then pay it forward again. So that’s what I hope to do soon.”

The film studio is located on a former Confederate army base built by slaves. Perry added: “The property that slaves built, that was once a Confederate Army base. Think about the poetic justice in that.”

“The Confederate Army is fighting to keep Negroes enslaved in America, fighting, strategy, planning on this very ground. And now this very ground is owned by me.”

    Katrina / 20 February 2020

My Name is Katrina and I know what it is like to become homeless and have to go to a shelter. My experience was so positive that it makes me want to open my own shelter that could help others the way my community helped me. I would love to tell you my ideas Tyler Perry and see if we could collaborate on my dream and make it a reality. In Flint, Michigan Human Trafficking is one of the highest crime rates and I would really like to help those at risk. Part of my shelter would even be that I would have kennels so those needing to leave a bad situation could keep their animals. There are a lot of people who need to recover from domestic violence that don’t leave that situation due to the fact that they don’t want to lose their fur babies. I know I would hate to loose my two service animals again.
