EXCLUSIVE: Netflix Releases 'Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City' Featurette

It’s almost time to head back to 28 Barbary Lane…

Netflix has dropped a new featurette for their upcoming miniseries Tales of the City, inspired by Armistead Maupin’s books and the 1993 PBS adaptation.

The original Tales of the City followed Mary Anne Singleton (Laura Linney) after she left her daughter and husband and moved to San Francisco to pursue her career. She lived on 28 Barbary Lane with landlord Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and gay, queer, and trans housemates who ultimately helped Mary Ann find herself.

The upcoming Netflix adaptation is set twenty years after the original; the synopsis reads, Mary Anne will come back to “present-day San Francisco, where she is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal, her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane.”

To help fans get even more excited for upcoming limited series, we’ve partnered with Netflix to debut an exclusive featurette that goes behind the scenes and offers up a little history of 28 Barbary Lane. The featurette offers a first look at Jen Richards as young “Anna Madrigal” and Daniela Vega as her best friend “Ysela” in a flashback episode (ep 8) focused on Anna’s arrival to San Francisco. The episode depicts the 1966 San Francisco and Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, which marked the beginning of the transgender rights movement.

Netflix’s 10-episode Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City is slated to debut on Netflix on Friday, June 7.
