2019 Green Space Festival: 4 Questions For DJ Morabito

Is Toronto Pride ready for a little Morabito…

By Mathieu Chantelois

Few names have dominated the dance scene over the course of three decades and remain as relevant, current and celebrated as DJ Susan Morabito. Morabito has graced countless sound systems around the world and will be back in Canada later this month for Toronto Pride’s legendary outdoor party, Lipstick Jungle.

You said it many times on social media, Green Space Festival is one of your favourite music festivals. Why is that?
Green Space Festival offers something for everybody. The event takes place outdoors and captures both the magic of the day and the evening. It comes with the most positive and warm vibes with complete acceptance of everything and everybody.I don’t often play for a predominantly female crowd, and this is an opportunity for me to do so. Also the women, and the men who there are completely open to all sorts of music. I really appreciate both the acceptance and the taste level of the crowd. Everything is exceptionally well-done, and all the people I work with are highly professional and gracious.

Lipstick Jungle is a celebration of female empowerment. Tell us why that celebration is important nowadays?
It celebrates our achievements, our contributions, offers inspiration and secures our rights. We have come a long way, but we’re still not where we should be.

In your view, have Pride celebrations changed over the last decades? If so, how?
Yes, they’ve transformed in many ways. What’s more visible is how they’ve become massive and more people are a part of them regardless of their sexual orientation.

Who runs the world?
I wish I could scream “girls”, but the truth is that it’s men, predominantly white men.

Green Space Festival’s Lipstick Jungle, in support of The 519, takes place on Saturday June 22, 2019 from 1 pm until midnight in Barbara Hall Park (519 Church Street). Entrance is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, visit: greenspaceto.org.
