5 LGBTQ Comics Appearing At Toronto’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival

Five queer comedians who will have you laughing at #JFL42…

Just for Laugh’s Toronto Comedy Festival (#JFL42) begins on September 20 and promises 10 days of hilarious comedy featuring nearly 80 comedians. The headliners for this season include Seth Myers, Hannibal Buress and Crazy Rich Asians’ Ken Jeong. You’ll be spoilt for choice but if you’re still making a list of who to see, check out our picks:

Margaret Cho
Well before Crazy Rich Asians dominated the box office, Cho was establishing her iconic status with her TV show All-American Girl, winning multiple Grammy awards for her comedy albums, plus her ground-breaking off-Broadway show I’m The One That I Want which was turned into a best-selling book and feature film. Cho has been a powerful activist supporting LGBT rights, and has won awards for her humanitarian efforts on behalf of women, Asian Americans and the LGBT community.

Fortune Feimster
When Mindy Kaling cast Fortune Feimster in not just one but two of her projects (The Mindy Project and Champions) you know this writer, comedian and actress is something special. Feimster has made an impact amongst the LGBT community and in the television world appearing in Glee, Office Christmas Party, and Life in Pieces. When she isn’t acting, she’s doing comedy tours around the world.

Murray Hill
The pioneer this NYC-based comedian has been everywhere and we mean everywhere. Hill has been on TLC’s LI Medium, LOGO’s New Now Next and Cocktails & Classics, HBO’s Bored to Death, BRAVO’s Watch What Happens Live, HBO’s Taxi Cab Confessions, and BRAVO’s Real Housewives of New York. We did say everywhere.

Matteo Lane
He was named one of the Just For Laughs 2014 New Faces, putting him in the same group as Amy Shumer, Kevin Hart and Dave Chappelle. An LGBT comic who incorporates his sexuality into his material, Lane is host of the hit Snapchat series Ghost Hunt, which explores the common online dating theme of “ghosting” and stars on MTV’s Girl Code and Guy Code. He’s also trained classical singer, oil painter, and has a Netflix special coming out at the end of the month as part of The Comedy Lineup series. We also hear from a little bird that he might be debuting some new work at JFL42 so you’ll have to be there to see it.

Chanty Marostica
Our final pick is a non-binary trans comedian extraordinaire. They are a Canadian Comedy Award nominee, with appearances on CBC’s Debaters, Workin’ Moms and is a semi-finalist in the SiriusXm Top Comic competition, happening at JFL42. Go cheer them on!

The Just for Laughs’ Toronto Comedy Festival runs from September 20 – 29, 2018.
