It’s been a big year for openly gay actor Jonathan Bailey. Just weeks ago he was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive (Bailey is the first gay actor to receive People‘s honour), and now it has been revealed that Bailey is actually the highest-grossing box office star of 2025.
Bailey, of course, starred in two of the biggest films of the year: Jurassic World: Rebirth and Wicked: For Good.
Bailey played paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis in Jurassic World: Rebirth, which opened in theatres across the country on July 2, 2025, helping the film to achieve a $868 million worldwide gross.
Jurassic World: Rebirth currently sits as the fourth-highest grossing film of 2025, trailling only behind Ne Zha 2, Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie.
This past weekend Wicked: For Good, the second film in the two-part movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, opened in theatres across the country with Bailey playing Prince Fiyero. The film, which officially opened on November 21, 2025, made its debut with a strong $150 million in North America this weekend, according to estimates from Comscore.
The Wicked: For Good haul surpasses the $112.5 million domestic launch of the original Wicked movie, meaning the sequel has set a new record for biggest opening weekend ever for a film based on a Broadway show. The record was previously held by the first Wicked film, which came out in November 2024.
Bailey’s high-grossing box office domination in 2025 is a huge win for LGBTQ+ representation on the big screen, considering actors have regularly spoken out saying that being out could cost them high profile roles.
The actor has spoken about his sexuality a number of times throughout the years although he wasn’t always as open about it.
“Of course I thought that in order to be happy I needed to be straight,” he told GQ back in 2022. “I reached a point where I thought, (expletive) this, I’d much prefer to hold my boyfriend’s hand in public or be able to put my own face picture on Tinder and not be so concerned about that than getting a part.”
Ironically, Bailey’s win comes just a week after the news that 41% of all LGBTQ+ characters on television will not return next season due to cancellations, limited series runs, or a character dating or leaving a show.
