The 'Red, White & Royal Blue' Sequel Is Officially Confirmed...With A Wedding Surprise!

The ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Sequel Is Officially Confirmed…With A Wedding Surprise!

After two years of speculation, the Emmy nominated film has finally been greenlit. Though details are still sparse…

Amazon MGM Studios is cordially inviting us to a royal wedding. Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and Prince Henry (Nick Galitzine) are coming back! The sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue has officially been greenlit with a new title – Red, White & Royal Wedding.

“After seeing the incredible outpouring of love for Red, White & Royal Blue from fans around the world, it’s clear Alex and Henry’s story truly resonated with audiences,” Julie Rapaport, head of film, production and development at Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement. The studio has not confirmed a release date for the sequel.

The news comes as a sigh of relief for fans, after author Casey McQuiston made a cryptic announcement in August. “I think it’s safe to say our pencils are kind of down for now and we’ll see what comes next as far as moving forward,” they revealed.

The other big news was that Jamie Babbit would replace the film’s original director Matthew López for the sequel. “We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy,” Babbit said about the film. She added how thrilled she was to be back in the “queer love universe,” after directing But I’m a Cheerleader.

López is still involved with the project, co-writing the sequel alongside McQuiston and Gemma Burgess. The trio have been working on the follow-up for some time, but Amazon did not release any plot details.

While speaking to Yahoo! Queer Voices in July, McQuiston gave some insight on the script. “I think what you can expect from the sequel is a glimpse into Alex and Henry’s life after the confetti has finished falling from the first movie. You have to move forward together as two adults in a real serious adult partnership.” They added the couple’s relationship would be tested as they are pulled in different directions.

Whatever the plot is, we hope there isn’t another cake casualty.

Who is starring in Red, White & Royal Wedding?

The film is an original concept as McQuiston never wrote a sequel to her 2019 best-selling novel. With no source material, fans can’t speculate who will return, depart or be introduced.

Taylor Zakhar Perez will reprise his role as Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the US president. Nick Galitzine will also return as British royal Prince Henry. There is no word yet on the rest of the cast.

Uma Thurman told Letterboxd earlier this year that she’s ready to step back into the role as the US President and Zakhar Perez’s mother. “When it’s ready, I will do it. We don’t know what Ellen [her character] will be up to, but yeah.”

What happened in Red, White & Royal Blue?

Red, White & Royal Blue came out in 2023. It follows the relationship between Alex Claremont-Diaz , son of the US president, and Prince Henry, a British Royal. After an embarrassing encounter with Prince Henry, Alex must fix the situation to save US/UK relations and his mother’s re-election. As Alex and Prince Henry try to fix the mistake, their relationship turns from hatred to love. The pair must then navigate their budding love for each other while keeping their appearances in the public eye.

Fans can watch the film on Prime Video in Canada.
