The queer coming-of-age comedy series, starring Benito Skinner, has officially been renewed by Prime Video…
After months of speculation, Prime Video has officially given the greenlight for Benito Skinner to head back to college. Overcompensating, a coming-of-age queer comedy based on a fictionalized and closeted version of Skinner, was renewed for a second season.
Skinner will write, executive produce and star in season two. “I have been so overwhelmed by the insane response to the show, and feel so damn lucky to go back to Yates University with Amazon MGM Studios, A24, Strong Baby, and this legendary cast for Season 2!! PLAY SUPER BASS :),” Skinner said in a statement.
The show was met with mostly positive reviews when it premiered back in May. It also became a hit for the streamer. Prime Video’s head of TV, Vernon Sanders, told Deadline they were “super excited by the results” of the show and how proud they were of it.
What is Overcompensating about?
The eight episode college-set ensemble comedy, shot in Toronto, premiered in May 2025. It follows the “chaotic journey of Benny (Skinner), a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen (Wally Baram), an outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs.” The series explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while finding out who we really are. A series highlight was the nostalgic pop soundtrack featuring hits such as Britney Spears Lucky and Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass.
The series starred Wally Baram (Carmen), Mary Beth Barone (Benny’s sister Grace), Adam DiMarco (Grace’s boyfriend Peter) and Rish Shah (Benny’s love interest Miles). The first season also had notable guest appearances by Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, Megan Fox, Charli XCX, Lukas Gage, Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers and more.
Reflecting on the first season at a FYC (For Your Consideration) event in Hollywood this past June, Skinner shared the impact the show had after only a month. “Some of the conversations I’ve had in the past few months are like, ‘oh, but a coming out story now? Everyone’s gay,'” he recalled at the panel. “Maybe in Los Angeles and maybe in New York, but I don’t think we know what people are saying in locker rooms in Idaho still, and I think if it’s anything like what’s going on in the White House, it’s probably not that nice. It really took me one line that someone said when I was in first grade to be like, oh, I’m unlovable like this. I have to change who I am.”
What will happen in season two of Overcompensating?
There is no word yet on where the series will pick-up, but season one ended on a cliffhanger. The closing minutes of the finale saw Benny’s biggest secret revealed in front of his sister and crush.
During the FYC panel Skinner shared his hopes for potential season two storylines. “We have so many stories that we are not done telling,” he shared. “There’s so much more to say in that experience of someone who’s in the closet versus out, and the friction and finding friendship and that. Also, the siblings! There’s so much to say here, and if you’ve seen the finale, you know that they might have to talk. I think we’re ready to go. I mean, we’ve pitched it. We’re ready.”
Some fans are hoping to see more of Benny’s parents (Connie Britton, Kyle Lachlan), his high school crush Sammy (Lukas Cage) and a deeper exploration, and even a love triangle, with George (Owen Thiele). Of course, fans also want more outrageous one-liners from Carmen’s roommate Hailee Matthews (Holmes).
Fans of the series can now rest easy. Season two is coming…the big question is when?
