Montréal’s Gay Village Redevelopment Project Will Have You Dancing In The Street

An infrastructure project along Sainte-Catherine Street East will pedestrianize the roadway making it a year round attraction…

For 19 years, Montreal’s Gay Village has transformed into a pedestrian only hub during the summer. Now, a redevelopment project will make a one kilometre stretch on Sainte-Catherine Street East, between Berri Street and Papineau Avenue, completely vehicle free by 2030.

“With its year-round pedestrianization, Sainte-Catherine East Street will have the same conditions for success as it has in the summer, and will become a unique winter destination in the country,” said Montréal mayor Valérie Plante in a statement about the project.

What features will the Sainte-Catherine Street East redevelopment have?

The pedestrianization of the street will include a number of new features. The city will increase greenery planting around 225 trees and install plant pits. Street furniture will bring up to 125 seats to the area, perfect for relaxing or for those waiting for their date to arrive. Above the street, a colourful light canopy will illuminate the stretch with pride.

The features were a result of consultations with local residents and businesses expressing what they would want from the redevelopment. “For years, members of the Village community, as well as merchants have collaborated with us and supported us in our various actions to revitalize the Village,” shared city councillor Robert Beaudry. “Many of them participated in the consultation activities and targeted consultations that led to the project we are unveiling today.”

The redevelopment will also improve safety and offer an inclusive living and business environment.

When will the pedestrianized portion open?

Starting fall 2026, the street will undergo a construction project to replace aging underground infrastructure. “Whenever major underground work is necessary on a commercial artery, we take the opportunity to improve the amenities and the street experience,” the mayor shared.

The pedestrianization of the street will open in phases as sections of Sainte-Catherine Street East are completed. It is expected to fully open by 2030.
