The season one queen, who was in a near fatal car accident in June, is sending a message to fans about their current condition…
Last month, Canada’s Drag Race season one queen Ilona Verley was involved in a near fatal car accident. The Two-Spirit queen suffered a bone deep laceration, dislocated jaw, broken nose, concussion, fractured spine and more in the accident.
A GoFundMe was started to support the queen with their living expenses as a majority of their income comes from physical and in-person performances as well as speaking engagements. As of publication, the GoFundMe has achieved 87 per cent of its $24,000 goal, raising over $20,000.
Now, Verley is sharing an update with fans a month later about their recovery journey.
How is Ilona Verley doing?
“Today marks one month since my life changed forever,” the caption of Verley’s latest Instagram Reel reads. The reel shows the healing progress of the queen’s injuries, depicting their wounds gradually improving over the month. In the post, Verley says it’s been hard grasping how to live in an injured body, but says they are learning to give themselves grace and how to be patient.
In the update, which has over 6,700 likes, the queen shares that they are able to walk and sit up without major pain. They also said that the bruising has mostly cleared up, especially on their face. “Starting to see parts of my face come back has been exciting,” the post continues.
Verley is also starting to get out of the house, which seems to be making a difference for the queen. “The last week or so I have been feeling more like a human and less like a patient with small outings and a couple trips home to spend time in my own space and to update my wardrobe at my mama’s!”
The caption ends with the queen saying they’re still waiting to see a spine specialist. In the description of the GoFundMe page, it was noted that Verley may have suffered further spinal injuries, but that doctors would have to wait at least a week after the accident to confirm. It’s unclear if this appointment is to make that initial assessment or not.
A thank you to fans
Verley also took time to thank everyone who has sent them a DM. They explain that they’ve been sleeping a lot and don’t have much capacity to reply to every single message, but appreciates it. “I just want to be honest on that so no one thinks I’m ignoring them, the outpouring of constant support has been so incredible but far beyond my current ability to keep up with fully.”
The post also thanks everyone for donating to the GoFundMe, saying it has helped make the process smoother
