The Fab Five have started production on the final season of Netflix’s award-winning show in Washington, DC…
Netflix’s longest running unscripted series is coming to an end. After 10 seasons, Queer Eye is saying goodbye as it starts production on its last set of makeovers in Washington, DC.
The series follows five fabulous LGBTQI+ experts as they makeover and improve the lives of everyday heroes, while spreading kindness and love. Each cast member brings an expertise to share with the selected hero. Tan France handles fashion, Karamo Brown brings his culture and lifestyle knowledge, Jonathan van Ness focuses on grooming, Antoni Porowski shares food and drink tips and its newest cast member Jeremiah Brent brings his interior design expertise.
Since launching in 2018, the show has visited nine states and travelled to three countries. It even spawned two localized versions in Germany and Brazil. The series broke an Emmys record becoming the first series to have six consecutive wins in the Outstanding Structured Reality Program category (2018 to 2023). It won five additional Emmy Awards in technical categories like editing, directing and casting.
What has the reaction been from the Queer Eye cast?
Members of the Fab Five took to social media to share their feelings about the cancellation.
“It’s been a long, beautiful journey we’ve been on, and I truly appreciate all of the love and support for our little show, that changed my life in ways I never thought possible,” France said in a post featuring an image from the show’s promo shoot. “As we begin our farewell season here in D.C. I simply want to say thank you! Thank you!!!!”
Jonathan van Ness also posted the image saying “Season 10, the final season ❤️ We are so excited to bring this finale to you, and excited for what’s next.” Original Fab Five member, and current recurring judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Carson Kressley responded to the post congratulating Ness and expressing his excitement for the final season.
France and van Ness also left a note on Netflix’s post. The pair expressed their excitement and what a joy it has been to bring the series to the world.
Porowski posted to his Instagram Stories saying “Let’s make our last one count.” Newcomer Brent reposted some behind the scenes footage from the promo shoot as his tribute.
Has Bobby Berk said anything?
For the first eight seasons Bobby Berk was the design expert on the show. Berk’s departure was accompanied by rumours that he was asked to leave after tension between him and the other four.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, the former Fab Five member acknowledged a small ‘feud’ with France, but ultimately said he didn’t expect the series to continue and began working on other projects. “All the plans that I had made when I thought we weren’t coming back, I just wasn’t willing to change those. I would have had to pump the brakes on multiple other projects that are already in process.”
As of publication, Berk has said nothing about the final season.
Rebooting a queer classic
The Netflix series was a reboot of Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, which aired from 2003 to 2007. It became a surprise hit for the network and ended after 100 episodes. It changed its name to Queer Eye in season three to be more inclusive. The original Fab Five included Ted Allen (food and wine), Kyan Douglas (grooming), Thom Filicia (design), Carson Kressley (fashion) and Jai Rodriguez (culture).
Its popularity led to the spin-off Queer Eye for the Straight Girl. The series followed the same format with four ‘Gal Pals,’ consisting of three gay men and a lesbian. The show lasted one season.
