RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 9 Episode 1 Recap: Drag Queens Save The World

Eight sickening queens return to the werk room to compete for a $200,000 donation to a charity of their choice. Actress Keke Palmer is a guest judge…

It’s been less than a month since Nymphia Wind was crowned as America’s newest Drag Superstar, but there’s even more fun to be had with a new season of All Stars. This season we’ll see a smaller group of our favourite queens returning to the werk room. They’re of course competing to hang their portrait in the Drag Race Hall of Fame next to iconic queens like Jinkx Monsoon, Trixie Mattel, Shea Couleé, and of course last season’s Canadian winner Jimbo. This year, they’re also competing for a $200,000 cheque to be donated to the charity of their choice. It’s time to meet these iconic queens (again) and see what they’ll bring to the werk room this season. Let’s get into it!

The season begins in an empty werk room, but it doesn’t stay empty for long. Gottmik from season 13 is the first to enter. You’ll remember her for her creative lewks and for being the first openly trans man on Drag Race. She’s competing this season for Trans Lifeline. Roxxxy Andrews is back, back, back again. It’s her third time in the werk room after competing in season five and the second season of All Stars 2, and she’s ready to take the crown this time around. She’s playing for The Miracle of Love, a Florida-based charity near to her heart. Following Roxxxy, another iconic queen enters the werk room for a third time. Miss Vanjie became an internet star after being eliminated first during season 10. Ru had her back for season 11 where she made it to the top five. Vanjie is competing for the ASPCA to give some money back to the animals. Angeria Paris VanMicheals is next in the werk room. We first met her in season 14 where she made it all the way to the finale. She’s happy to have another chance to win some money for the National Black Justice Coalition. Next back into the werk room is none other than Nina West from season 11. She was a threat when it came to comedy and acting challenges. She didn’t make it to top four on her season but since season 11 she’s been on Broadway in a production of Hairspray for two years. She’s playing for The Trevor Project, who she has been working with for years.

Plastique makes her entrance after Vanjie’s bobby pin jacket almost takes Roxxxy’s eye out. Plastique was known on her season for bringing lewks to the runway on season 11 but she couldn’t find her voice during her time on the show. She’s currently the most followed Ru girl on social media and she’s using her influence this season to play for the Asian American Foundation. Jorgeous from season14 enters and she was known for serving on the runway and dancing, but her acting skills landed her in the bottom a bunch. She became a lip sync assassin and she’s not afraid to use it again as she competes for National Alliance on Mental Illness. Shannel from season 1 and the first season of All Stars was the first queen to ever enter the werk room and she’s officially the last queen to enter for this season. She’s back to compete for The Anxiety and Depression Association of America.

Rupaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 9 Episode 1 Recap: Drag Queens Save The World

Ru enters the werk room to officially welcome his gorgeous glamazons to this season. Ru wants the girls to use their Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent for good. In order for them to win as much money as possible for their charities, there will be no eliminations this season. After each challenge Ru will name the top two queens of the week. Both queens will be awarded a Benefactress Badge. The top two will lip sync for a $10,000 tip for their charity as well as the chance to block another queen from receiving a badge the following week. At the end of the season, the three queens with the most badges will battle it out to win an additional donation of $200,000 for their charity of choice. It’s already time for the first mini challenge. The library is officially open! Everybody takes turns reading each other to filth before Ru announces that the winner of the reading challenge is Roxxxy Andrews. For their first All Starschallenge they’ll be writing and performing their own iconic verses for this season’s theme song Drag Queens Save the World. They’ll be writing, recording, choreographing, and performing the whole song themselves, so they’ve got to get to work.

The queens get to unpacking and getting out of drag and asking each other who they think the biggest competition is this season. Once they’re out of drag they get to work listening to their song and writing the lyrics to their verses. They all have an open conversation about what it means to be a drag queen to continue fighting for LGBTQ+ people in America and all over the world. After they finish writing their lyrics they move to the main stage to choreograph their performance together. The group chooses Jorgeous and Vanjie to come up with all of the steps for the routine. Jorgeous really goes for the steps but she needs to simplify it for the rest of the queens. Everybody’s getting confused and Shannel even falls off the stage trying to learn the routine, but they’ll get it eventually.

It’s runway day and the queens are feeling ready for their first maxi challenge of the season. They break off into smaller groups to talk strategy and who they think are the biggest threats for this challenge while getting ready for the mainstage. Out on the runway Ru introduces this week’s All Star judges Michelle, Ross, and this week’s extra special guest, Keke Palmer. Ru does a performance of Hustle That Cat before heading to the panel herself.

It’s time for the premiere performance of Drag Queens Save The World. All of the queens look strong and powerful in superhero-inspired outfits as they perform and each of them have strong and fun lyrics. All of the judges are really loving the performance. Following the performance the category on the runway is “Signature Look, Signature Fragrance”. Each of the queens present a stunning look as well as a matching bottle of signature fragrance.

All Star rules are in full effect. Ru will pick two queens who will receive a badge and they’ll lip sync for an additional donation for their charity. The winner will also get to block one of the other queens from getting a badge the following week. Critiques start with Gottmik. Michelle loves her signature look and said her lyrics packed a punch. Ross also loves her chic look and the presentation of her perfume. Michelle tells Nina there’s a different confidence in her performance and she loved hearing her voice in the song. Ross compliments her storytelling all the way through the challenges this week. Ross tells Plastique she was the boss bitch of the performance and Kiki loved her lyrics. Michelle tells Angie that she felt her power jump off the stage during her performance and Keke was eating up her southern belle fragrance. Keke also loved the energy Miss Vanjie brought to every challenge. Michelle tells Jorgeous she couldn’t stop watching her and Ross agrees that she’s one of the best dancers that’s ever been on the show. Michelle loved that she was giving old school drag during the performance and loved her perfume, too and all of the other judges agreed. Michelle tells Roxxxy she wasn’t the best dancer of the group but she was having the most fun on stage, which she appreciated.

Following deliberations, Ru announces that based on their performances and their signature look/fragrance presentations, the top two All Stars of the week are Angeria and Jorgeous! Both queens have earned a Benefactress Badge and a chance to win extra tip money for their charity.

The two top queens lip sync for their charity to a remix of Million Dollar Bill by Whitney Houston. Both queens are giving an All Stars-worthy performance with their own signature flair. Ru chooses Angeria as the first lip sync winner. She’s won $10,000 for her charity and she gets to block another queen from getting a badge next week. Angeria decides that with her power she will pass the Ruby Snippers to cut-off Roxxxy from getting a badge next week. She’ll still be able to compete, and even win, but she won’t get a badge.

Next week on All StarsThe queens are throwing The Paint Ball where they’ll have to make a look from scratch and present it on the runway.
