RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 Episode 5 Recap: House of Fashion

The queens design couture out of curtains in the first sewing challenge of the season and superstar Janelle Monáe is a guest judge…

Last week after a double serving of Snatch Game, Sugar (of Sugar and Spice) sashayed away from the competition. The elimination took place after a semi-choreographed lip sync with/against her twin. Loosey LaDuca took top toot of the week with her impeccable impersonation of the late Joan Rivers, which many Drag Race fans are already calling one of the best Snatch Game performances of all time. This week the queens will take part in their first sewing challenge of the season and Janelle Monáe is a guest judge. Let’s get into it!

This week’s episode begins with the remaining queens entering the werk room following Sugar’s elimination. Everyone gathers around the mirror to read her goodbye message. Spice begins to cry but says she has to continue on in the competition for Sugar. Over on the couches they debrief the drama between Marsha and Mistress (from Untucked) before getting out of drag. Spice tells Mistress some of the other girls don’t deserve to be here over Sugar… but who is she talking about?

It’s a new day and the queens re-enter the werk room. Over at the table, Aura asks Spice to elaborate on her comment from the night before but Ru saves her by making a grand entrance. For this week’s mini challenge the library is officially open. They all take turns reading each other to filth and they did NOT hold back this season. Ru announces that the winner of this week’s mini challenge is Loosey LaDuca. Ru also tells the queens that for this week’s maxi challenge they will form three fashion houses and turn home decor into haute couture. The three teams will be House of Kressley, House of Matthews, and House of Visage. After being randomly split into teams everybody goes shopping for their materials in their aesthetically themed rooms.

Back in the werk room the queens take their fabric scraps and come up with a game plan to showcase their individual designs while looking cohesive as a fashion collection. House of Kressley is working with southern Americana themed fabrics, House of Matthews has more of a Palm Springs resort vibe, and House of Visage is filled with rich jewel tones and fierce animal prints. Ru enters the room to check on the team’s progress. They all get back to work and Jax asks Spice who she thinks should have been in the bottom. In confessionals Mistress says she wishes she was just honest and said Aura was the queen she thought should have been in the bottom.

It’s elimination day and the queens put the finishing touches on their runway looks while doing their makeup. Jax talks about the troubles she had growing up adopted in her predominantly white hometown while Spice talks about the shame she and Sugar had growing up playing with dolls and how it ultimately shaped their drag personas on the other side of the room. Out on the main stage Ru introduces this week’s panel of judges Michelle, Ross, and this week’s extra special guest Janelle Monáe.

The runway kicks off with the House of Visage and they definitely have cohesive animal print evening wear. The House of Kressley is up next and they’re serving schoolgirl chic with their assortment of plaid. Last up is the House of Matthews’s resort collection and Sasha Colby opens it with a show stopping swimsuit. Back out on the mainstage Ru tells Mistress, Aura, Spice, Anetra, Loosey, and Marsha that they are all safe.

The remaining queens represent the tops and bottoms and critiques start with Amethyst. Michelle tells her she appreciates her taking her notes on her nose contour, but all of the judges clock her no-sew gown. Michelle loves Luxx’s flawless zebra pants and Janelle adores the way she sold her look down the runway. Michelle liked that Robin’s look was cohesive with the group but current. The judges give props to Jax’s pleated skirt construction but the rest of her look wasn’t giving what she wanted it to. Everyone agrees that Salina’s lewk was a miss that she got lost in. Everyone loves Sasha’s lewk but Janelle says it looks like she was struggling with her robe. Finally all of the judges praise Malaysia’s construction which has her (and everybody watching, TBH) gagged because it’s the first thing she’s ever sewn.

After deliberations Ru names Luxx Noir London as the winner of this week’s maxi challenge. Robin, Sasha, Malaysia, and Jax are all safe for the week which leaves Salina and Amethyst at the bottom queens and are therefore both up for elimination. This is Amethyst’s third consecutive week in the bottom. They lip sync to Q.U.E.E.N by Janelle Monáe and both of the girls give it their all but Salina is for sure giving it a little something extra. Ru announces Salina will live to slay another day. Amethyst is told to sashay away and becomes the fourth queen to be eliminated this season.

Next week on Drag Race: it’s girl group week and Comedian Megan Stalter is a guest judge.
