October 28, 1998: Today in LGBTQ+ history…

You might have expected it in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. But from a city in Manitoba? Not so much. So there was plenty of surprise—and much delight—when on October 28, 1998, 17 years ago this month, Winnipeg elected Canada’s first openly gay mayor, Glen Murray. Today, as a member of Provincial Parliament for Toronto Centre, the pioneering Murray is but one of many Canadian politicians who identify as LGBTQ.
