Netflix Drops First Teaser For 'Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City'

“When I first got off the bus years ago,” Laura Linney’s character says of San Francisco, “I had the strangest feeling that I’d come home”…

Netflix has dropped the first teaser for Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, a continuation of the three miniseries based on Maupin’s groundbreaking LGBTQ-themed novels that aired on PBS and Showtime starting in 1994. It will premiere June 7 on the streamer.

Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Barbara Garrick and Paul Gross are reprising the roles they played in three previous miniseries based on Armistead Maupin’s books: Tales of the City (1993), More Tales of the City (1998) and Further Tales of the City (2001). Ellen Page, Murray Bartlett, Charlie Barnett, Josiah Victoria Garcia and May Hong also will be series regulars in Netflix’s new chapter of the story.

The original PBS miniseries broke rating records while offering ground-breaking portrayals of LGBTQ characters when it first aired in 1994. It also attracted controversy when conservative lawmakers threatened to cut federal funding for PBS. Showtime aired sequels More Tales of the City in 1998 and Further Tales of the City in 2001.

Netflix’s Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City moves the timeline ahead to the present (the previous miniseries had taken place largely in the 1970s) and finds Linney’s Mary Ann returning to San Francisco after 20 years and reuniting with her daughter, Shawna (Page), and ex-husband Brian (Gross). She’s also drawn back into the orbit of Mary Ann Madrigal (Dukakis), her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents at 28 Barbary Lane.

“When I first got off the bus years ago,” Laura Linney’s character says of San Francisco, “I had the strangest feeling that I’d come home.”

The 10-episode series is slated to debut on Netflix on June 7. You can watch the first teaser for Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City below.
