One Million Moms Campaigns Against Trans Children's Book

One Million Moms is pushing Scholastic to stop publishing pro-transgender children’s books…

One Million Moms has picked a new target to campaign against, and this time it’s children’s books. The conservative advocacy group is rallying against Scholastic for publishing books that discuss transgender kids.

This time around One Million Moms, a division of the American Family Association, has specifically targeted a book titled George. The book, aimed at children between grades 3 to 7, focuses on a transgender 10-year-old, who hopes to play the role of Charlotte in the school’s production of Charlotte’s Web.

When the children’s book was first released back in 2015, George’s author Alex Gino, a queer activist and writer, told NPR that the book was intended to help transgender kids feel “less alone.” The following year, George received a Stonewall Book Award, a California Book Award and a Lambda Literary Award.

Studies have continuously shown that transgender youth have an increased risk of depression and suicide when rejected by their families.

One Million Moms, who is infamously remembered for targeting several television shows and their failed attempt to remove Ellen Degeneres as the J.C. Penny spokesperson back in 2012, is asking followers to boycott Scholastic unless it stops publishing pro-homosexual and pro-transgender children’s books.

“Scholastic is not safe for your child and parents should be warned,” the group wrote on their website, also claiming that the children’s publishing company does not have children’s best interest in mind. The group is suggesting that Scholastic’s publishing goes against the American College of Pediatrics.

“The American College of Pediatricians warns: ‘Conditioning children into believing that a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse,’” said the group in a post last Wednesday. The organization is considered to be socially conservative and has strong opinions toward the LGBTQ community.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, however, is actually supportive of transgender adults and children. The organization, comprised of over 60,000 doctors, denounces any marginalization of the LGBTQ community.
