So there was plenty of surprise—and much delight—when on October 28, 1998, 17 years ago this month, Winnipeg elected Canada’s first openly gay mayor, Glen Murray. Today, as a member of Provincial Parliament for Toronto Centre, the pioneering Murray is but one of many Canadian politicians who identify as LGBTQ.
